GISBORNE TENDER'S CAPTAIN.
A REMARKABLE RECORD. CITIZENS' TESTIMONIAL. *"'. . (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) •,,_ GISBORNE, this day.
A public tribute was paid to' Captain J. H. Hawkes, who for 25 years has commanded the tender Tuatea, operating between-the and the roadstead. He has carried 300,000 passengers without a single mishap, despite the. awkward and sometimes positively dangerous conditions, under which passenger traffic was carried on at this port for many years. A testimonial, comprising a handsomely illuminated address and a substantial cheque, was presented at a large gathering, at which the chair was .taken by Dr. J. W. Williams, who 34 years ago was ship's doctor on the Kaikoura, on which vessel Captain Hawkes was second officer. , . ,'.' .Speakers referred to Captain .Hawkes' imperturbability under all conditions, and anecdotes gleaned from his former shipmates established him as one of the most, fearless officers in the New Zealand Shipping Company's service prior to 1900, when he retired from deep-sea employment and took up; coastal work.
