Yangtse River Blocked By Ice Jam. PROVINCE ISOLATED. (Received 10.30 a.m.) SHANGHAI, January 17. In the Szechwan Province the population of approximately 70,000,000 are virtually isolated. River communication is cut off in consequence of a terrific ice jam reported in the Yangtse gorges, Beyond . Ichang all river shipping _ customarily travelling in the gorges ie at a standstill. The icepacks are the result of a week of intense wintry conditions forming a solid wall. They are holding up many vessels and thousands of tone of cargo, causing much concern to shipping firms and merchants. Dynamite is believed to be necessary to reopen the gorges. Several British gunboats are temporarily held prisoners behind the icepacks, and thousands of inland junks and ferries throughout North China are similarly idle. Half the countrv's canals arc frozen in the severest winter for many years.
