CAKNIVAL REALISES £637.
BRIGADE TO BE EQUIPPED,
The chairman of the Queen CarmVal Committee (Mr. John Batty), with the organiser (Mr. H. J. McPhail) attended the meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council last evening, and handed to the council the proceeds of the carnival, amounting to £636 19/3. This had been raised for the purpose of assisting towards the purchase of a fire engine, the formation of a brigade, and the provision of equipment for fire suppression. Mr. Batty said they appreciated the generosity of the Colonial Sugar Company, in donating £200.. *
The Mayor, Mr. J. P. McPhail, accepted the cheque on behalf of the borough, and congratulated the committee and associated workers on the splendid result of their efforts. The council was not going to spend the money hurriedly, as it wanted to get the best equipment possible with a view to ensuring adequate protection against the dread enemy of fire-. '; •• '
Mr. Batty, on behalf of the Carnival Committee, presented Mi*. H. J. McPhail with a wristlet watch, suitably engraved, in appreciation of his services as organiser. Replying, Mr. McPhail said the result ha,d been very pleasing to ajl concerned, and particularly to the . ratepayers, due to the active committees and the'generosity of the Birkenhead people.
It was decided to convey the thanks of the council to the.Northcote Borough Council for consenting to .continue to afford fire protection to Birkenhead until a fire brigade is organised for that district, and equipment procured, -v''
