NEW ORLEANS CARGO.
PROPOSED DIRECT SERVICE
VESSEL NOW LOADING.
ECONOMY IN SHIPPING
At New Orleans the motor ship Fern
dale is v loading resin, asphalt, cotton linters, mahogany and canned goods for Auckland and southern ports. If her trip proves successful she will be the first vessel in a regular service between New Orleans and New Zealand.
The Ferndale is owned by the Fern Line, Messrs. Fearnley and Eger, of Oslo, who are the movers in tlie new trade. If sufficient cargo offers, they announce, they will probably run a vessel every month, bringing cargo for Auckland, southern ports and Australia.
At present cargo from New Orleans is shipped to New York or Los Angeles and transhipped at those ports to direct steamers. This involves both delay and expense. There has.been.no vessel direct from l\ew Orleans to New Zealand for some.years. The' only vessels which load in the Gulf of Mexico are tramps bringing sulphur or vessels., chartered' by the oil companies to bring out case oil, petroleum products and asphalt. -
Under the proposed itinerary of the Fern Line, their vessels will 'pick up petroleum products at Mexican and U.S. ports on the Gulf.
