M.C.C. MATCH.
AGAINST S. CANTERBURY. ENGLAND NINE FOR 253. LOCALS START BADLY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) TIMARU, this day. The second day's play of the M.C.C. match against South Canterbury was begun this morning when Allom and Benson's ninth wicket partnership was continued. When stumps were drawn last evening the Englishmen had nine 'wickets down for 253, Allom being seven and Benson 20. The weather to-day was all that could be desired. The sun shone brilliantly from a cloudless sky, and a light easterly breeze at noon was just sufficient to temper the heat: There was a fair sized attendance when play began, and this increased considerably after midday. England declared, and South Canterbruy went to the wickets. They fared badly, losing Gregory and Eaton when their total was 12. At noon the score was 17 runs for t.Avo wickets. At lunch the score was Si for four wickets.
