HOYLAKE WINS.

VICTORIOUS AT AWAPUNI MANAWATU SECOND DAY. -; — * FULL FEATHER TAKES SPRINT PAGANELLI BEATEN IN STAKES'. (By Telegraph,—Special to " Star.") PALMERSTON N., Friday. Riccarton stables triumphed at Awapuni to-day, - when Hoylake won the principal race on the second day of the Manawatu Racing Club's summer meeting, while Full Feather, and Silver Coot, both trained on the Southern track, fought out a great finish in the open sprint. The weather was very rough and stormy,' a heavy nor'-west gale raging all day. Fortunately rain did not fall till about ten minutes before the last race, and the track was much drier for seven races than it was yesterday. Some wonderful racing was witnessed, the handicapper (Mr. J. Henrys) excelling himself. Backers had a disastrous day, the'best the favourites could do being to run two seconds and one deadheat for second. Speculation held up well, the total for the day being £34,105 compared with £33,777 last year, an increase of' £328 on the 1928 figures. ' Kelvin Handicap. The hack distance' event was again won by Balloon in good style after being freely used, the favourite, Make _Up, being relegated to fourth place. Ivilorell, Vinella, Make Up and Shortly led out of the straight, Goldlike being slow away'. There was not much change in the leading, order till five furlongs from home, when Skyrider and Balloon moved up, Shortly, Skyrider and Balloon running abreast round the home turn from Make' Up, Vinella and Goldlike. Balloon was out clear entering the straight, with Shortly, Skyrider, Make Up, Goldlike and Mothplane crowding after him. Balloon hung on and beat Goldlike by a. head, with Mothplane a length away. Make Up was fourth, followed by Plane, Sh6Vtly, Kiriana and Kilorell. No excuses can be made for the defeat of Make Up. Motliplgne again came from well back.

' The High-Weight. Warzone created a great surprise in the High:weight by downing the favourite Democratic, but the grey mare Mirabilary was a .good thing beaten .by indifferent horsemanship. Aurora Borealis and Warzdne led through the straight from Nightdew, Fiery Comet and Pole Star. Down the back Nightdew led from Warzone, Pole Star and, Fine Acre, with Mirabilary fighting for his head in last place. Mirabilary made a fast run from the five furlong post, and on the turn the order whs Mirabilary, Nightdew, Warzone and Democratic. Once in line Warzone and Democratic challenged Mirabilary, Warzone beating Democratic by half a length, with Mirabilary* a head away. Pine Acre was fourth, with Fiery Comet, Nightdew and Aurora Borealis next, Mirabilary should never have been beaten. Nightdew, a four-year-old halfsister. by Nightraid to Royal Star, ran a fair race. " , ' > Highden Handicap: The favourites lvere again beaten by an outsider in the hack sprint, when, Statuary scored from Fernden and Glenartney. Glenartney was first out, and joined by Leisure they had charge from Fernden, Hunting Boy and King Acre. King Acre was right up forward on the turn, with Statuary becoming prominent. Glenartney was still clear of Fernden and Statuary when well in line, but Statuary finished stoutly, and beat Fernden by a length and a half, Glenartney being a similar distance away third, with Hunting Boy fourth; then came Leisure and King Acre. Glenartney had every chance, and, as at Woodville, weakened at the finish. Fernden was crowded entering the straight; it may have cost him the race, but it is doubtful, as Statuary finished very well and put up an excellent performance. Heads Only Separate Four Horsea. The handicapper produced a wonderful finish in the principal race, the first four horses going across the line divided by heads, victory finally resting with the horse that stuck best (Hoylake). Ruanui was a firm favourite. Dolomite, Star Area, First Acre, Paitonu and Piuthair were prominent in the early stages, and there was no material change till the five furlongs, when Hoylake took up a prominent position, the order past the half and on to the turn being Dolomite and Star Area' from Hoylake, First Acre, Paitonu, Stanchion, Ruanui and Great Charter. . They bunched entering the straight, where first Hoylake then First Acre, and later Stanchion and Ruanui all flattered their supporters.. In a battling-finish Hoylake beat Ruanui by a short head, with First Acre a-head back, another head in front of Stanchion. Star Area and Great Charter were next. The last pair being Dolomite and Pai-' ( tonu. Hoylake owed his wiifcto superior stamina. The feature of the race was the wonderful showing of Stanchion, who is still, however, unruly at the barrier. Princess Betty Beats Paganelli. That there, are no certainties in racing was forcibly brought home to backers When Paganelli was defeated in the weiglit-for-age event, and that after having ever chance. Clirysology, Princess Betty, Paganelli, Miss Ransom and Roi de Val ran bunched for.'a furlong,' Admiral Drake beginning very slowly and Consent also losing ground. At the eftd of a .couple of furlongs Ohrysology and Princess Betty had drawn celar of ! Paganelli and Roi de Val. Clirysology hung out on the turn, letting up Paganelli, who was on terms at the three furlongs. Roi de Val was still prominent here, and Consent had moved up.. Once in line Princess Betty finished best, and beat Paganelli by half a length,' with Chrysology three parts of a length back. Consent was fourth, followed by Miss Ransom, Admiral Drake and Roi de Val. Princess Betty won on her merits. Paganelli appears to be off hjs best form. Terrace Handicap. Another outsider rolled home in the hack seven in High- Society, with the ' favourite, Head Serang, dividing second honours. Patearoa and Head Serang settled / down in front from Glenrossie and , Roundelay, followed by High Society, Footpad, Singer and Phastar. There was no material change till nearihg the straight, where Patearoa and Head Serang turned into line, just ahead of Glenrossie, Singer, High Society and Phastar. In a great struggle up the straight High Society just squeezed home- by inches from Head Serang and Patearoa, whom tilie judge was unable to stparate. Phastar was fourth, followed by Glenrossie, Singer and Valma. High Society has been a disappointing horse, but up to his best form to-day. Roundelay wag well up on the turn, but finished well back. Phastar ran a creditable race.

Himatangi Handicap. The second-class handicap maintained the ill-fortune of the favourites, Teri being soundly beaten. High Falutin lost ground at the start, Rameses, Rory Mor, Cerf and Borsalene leading out of the straight. Rory Mor being wide out.. When settled down Rameses led from Rory Mor and Cerf, with High Falutin and Don Jose making runs ,up. the back. On'the turn and into the straight the order was Rory Mor, High Falutin, Don Jose, Rameses, Manly and Cerf, all bunching. A fine race home saw Rory Mor get up on the fence and win by, a neck from High Falutin, with Manly a head away. Cerf was fourth, followed by Borsalene, Teri and Don Joss. High Falutin looked unlucky. , . ' Awapuni Handicap. The day finished in heavy' rain, and a complete record of eight disasters for the favourites, Keddar being unplaced in the open sprint, while Gold' Dawn, almost as well backed, could , only run third. Silver Coot, Dobbin, Gold Dawn and Royal Duke began best, and at the end of a furlong Silver Coot drew out from Dobbin, Gold Dawn and Royal Duke. At tAe half Full Feather moved up from a handy position,' arid the order on the turn was Silver Coot,' Gold Dawn, Dobbin, Royal Duke and Full Feather. Silver Coot turned for home first, and was almost immediately joined by Full Feather; the latter drew out at the last furlong, but Silver Coot came again, and Full Feather in a battling finish won by a long head. Gold Dawn was two lengths back third, with Juggle fourth. Royal Duke was fifth, followed by Keddar and Dobbin. The heavy rain was an advantage to ■ the winner. Silver Coot showed great speed, and this'Riccartpn pair were too good for the opposition. Results:—
