ASSAULTED A POLICEMAN.
CARPENTER SENT TO GAOL. "VICIOUS ACTION," SAYS J.P. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent; WHANGAREI, this day. John Ewen, aged 54, a carpenter, made himself objectionable in Cameron Street on Christinas Eve by following up some Maori men and women and abusing them. In the Police Court this morning Ewen Avas charged with drunkenness, using obscene language, resisting arrest, and assaulting Constable R. Beasley. He pleaded guilty to all charges, and asked that a fine be imposed. The Presiding Justice: It is no use fining a single man. The police cannot be assaulted. You have only to look at the constable's face in order to see the effect of your vicious action. Accused" was sentenced to one month's imprisonment in Mount Eden gaol.
