IMPROVING THE HERDS.
DEALING WITH CULIiS. NEW SCHEME FAVOURED. -« Mr. S. Lye, managing director of the Waikato *ind Thames Valley Co-op. Calf Byproducts Co., Ltd., has just returned from a very successful tour of the Morrinsville, ? Paeroa, Gordonton and North Auckland districts. At each meeting Mr. Lye explained the system for the prevention of /resale of ,cull dairy cows and explained that the farmers in all districts realised that there had to be eome method -whereby the farmer cpuld feel, assured that cows which had proved themselves to be "robbers" would not be passed on to other dairy farmers. In the future there would be no excuse for theee "robber" cows to travel from one farm *to another. . . Expressions of absolute confidence in the schemes were given at all meetings, and committees were set up to form "pools," which will be working from now on.
... Satisfaction was expressed at the sxicceeeful operations of the Calf Company, and motions of continued support were carried at every meeting. Mr.' Lye explained, that he could not promise them any fictitious prices would be paid for the cull'cows or bulls. The most farmers could get would be the economic value. They could not possibly expect any more.
With regard to "bobby" veal Mr. Lye stated that it was I interesting to note that an 'ever-increasing 'number of food manufacturers were becoming interested in the New Zealand veal. Consequently increasing competition would reeult in higher prices for this meat. Quality would have to be • carefully watched, and the packing, -which was now giving the London operators entire satisfaction would, if. possible, be improved next year. It was quite evident that this business had become a stabilised one. . '■
By the universal adoption of Mr; Lyc'e system it was considered that in the course of the next two seasons every farmer would be able to know that every cow or bull he purchased to improve his herd would be a genuinely good animal. He • would not be replacing culls with culls.
