RACING AT ELLERSLIE.

THE AUCKLAND CUP.

WON BY CONCENTRATE.

STAR STRANGER UNLUCKY.

RAILWAY TO HUNTING CRY.

EAGER EOSE WINS CHRISTMAS

The Auckland Racing Club opened their summer meeting at Ellerslie yesterday. The weather at the commencement was fine, though dull, but towards the cud of the.programme a. drizzling rain commenced to fall, which made matters rather unpleasant for patrons. There was a very large attendance; and during the day the sum of £121,417 was put through the totalisator, compared with £95,783 10/ for the corresponding day last season, an increase of £25.633 10/. The tyack, after the heavy rain that had fallen during the week, was in better order than anticipated, the going being fair. Concentrate won the Cup by a narrow margin from Star Stranger, who was very unlucky, for he did not get a aood passage over the concluding stages. Hunting Cry created a surprise by winning the Railway Handicap. Ho was not very well fancied and returned a double 'figure dividend. Gesture accounted for the Great Northern Foal Stakes, making her fifth successive win. This filly has only once been beaten, and that was in her first start. Eager Roso iuat stayed on long enough to win the Christmas Handicap irom Eaglet, who was rather unlucky. H. Gray, the rider of Pegaway, will appear before the stewards oil Monday regarding the running of that horse in the Christmas Handicap. The Cup. When the field lined up for the Cup Verticern, Seatown, Goshawk and Jaloux were missing, leaving a dozen horses to face the starter. It was a fair betting race and when the totalisator closed Star Stranger (£f>l7o), Paquito (£3710) and In the Shade (£2784) carried the bulk of the money. Concentrate, the winner, carried £1417. When the field lined np at the barrier, Concentrate, who drew No. 1 position, was on the rails and next to him was Corinax, Panther, Paquito, Historic, In the Shade, Shrewd, Spearmiss, Merry Hint, Prodice, Count Cavour and Star Stranger. They went away to a good start, Concentrate being first to show out from Corinax, Panther and Merry Mint. Crossing the top Panther had charge, with Merry Mint, Corinax, Concentrate, Prodice, 'Historic and Paquito following. As they passed the stand the first time the order was Panther and Merry Mint, then Corinax, Concentrate and Prodice racing on terms, with Star Stranger and Historic together, next, followed by Paquito, Shrewd and Count Cavour with Spearmiss and Jn the Shade last. Panther and Merry Mint were together four lengths in front of Corinax and Concentrate, also together, as they raced along the back, then Star Stranger and Historic together, and Prodice and Paquito also on terms, followed by Shrewd and Count Cavour. As they raced across the top the order was Merry Mint, Panther, Concentrate, Corinax and Historic. They turned into the straight with little change in the running, although Concentrate dropped back into fourth place, followed by Shrewd, Prodice, Spearmiss and Star Stranger. Half-way down the straight Corinax showed up. momentarily when Concentrate drew alongside and took the lead. Star Stranger then put in a strong challenge, but failed to get up by a head, with Count Cavour half a length away, third. Shrewd was fourth, followed by Prodice, Corinax, Paquito, Merry Mint, Panther, Historic, Spearmiss and In the- Shade. After the race for the Cup the chief stipendiary steward asked Green, rider of Paquito, a question regarding his mount interfering with Star Stranger. Green explained that his horse ran in towards the rails, and in doing so interfered with Star Stranger, but it was quite accidental. The explanation was accepted. . ; The Hurdles. The Lamb, Archeen and Lady Spalpeen dropped out of the Grafton Hurdles, and the publiQ,elected Pangolin ( £2397) favourite, "next in request being King's Guard (£2030) and Importer (£2014). When they were let go Kamehameha was first out from Catonian and lied Comet, then came Prince Lu and Importer. Catonian fell at the first fence, and passing the stand Prince Lu had charge, with Pangolin, Eed Comet, Importer, Eahepoto, Kamehameha and King's Guard following in the above order. There was no alteration along the back, where Pangolin came down at the hurdle by the seven-furlong post. Prince Lu still had charge crossing the top from Importer and Red Comet, then came Kamehameha and King's Guard. The last-named moved up into third place entering the straight, and in a good finish he got the verdict by a neck from Prince Lu, who beat Importer by half a length. Next to finish were Kamehameha, Glenotus, Eahepoto and Eed Comet.

The Ifursery. Karapoti, Oil' King and Kafflight declined their, engagements in the Nursery Handicap, and the public „ elected Hampton Park favourite, entrusting him with £2411, while Awaken (£1760) and Sight Draft' ( £1000) also had friends. Nimble was first out from Awaken, Sight Draft, Betterment, Arabeeque and Drastic, and they raced along the top 311 that order. Nimble was first into the straight from Sight Draft and Awaken, then came Betterment and Drastic. Nimble weakened in the run to the post and Awaken got the decision by one length and a half, with Sight Draft half a length away. Betterment was fourth, then came Drastic, Dunraven, Hampton Park, Tenterden and Grand Talk. Surprise in Railway. All the acceptors went to the post in tlio Railway Handicap, the chief sprint event"bn the programme.. Toxeuma was Made- favourite, carrying £2749, next in demand being Silvermine (£2240) and Oimabuc, who carried £17(57. When they were let go Toxeuma began best from Aw&rere, Great Star, Silvermine, Vallar and flefrcshor. Groat Star had charge crowing the top, attended by Silvermine and Vitllur, then ctuno Toxeuma, Cinmbu«, Awarere and Hofreslior with HuntUik Cry moving up. Tliey turned for Jjome in tliul; order and a good finish remjltud in Hunting Cry (jetting up in time to win hy half a length from Great Star, who bent fiilvurminc by Uiioc-quntcra of I a length. Toxeuma was fourth, followed I hy Awernre, Cimubue, Lucy Koac, I LuKriin, Lady Quex and Aepii'iijg, ■I "

Eager Rose's Christmas. Tlic day's racing concluded with the Christmas Handicap, for which Mervettc, Sir Russell, King Midas, Tea Time were scratched. Eager Rose (£4097) was favourite, while Prince Val (£2920) and Pegaway (£2409) also got good support. Prince Val got the worst of the start, and. •when the field had. settled down Pegaway was showing the way to Eager Rose,, Omor, Gcmlight and Flying Prince. Along the back Pegaway, Amor and Eager Rose were racing abreast, with Gemlight, The Hawk and Flying Prince also bunched, followed by Eaglet and High Pitch. Eager Rose took charge across the top, with Amor and Prince Val handy, then came The Hawk, Pegaway and High Pitch. Entering the straight ; Eager Rose was attended by Prince Val, Flying Prince, Amor, Royal Doulton, Pegaway and Eaglet, and although she ran about a little at the jinisli she lasted long enough to beat Eaglet by three-quarters of a length, with Amor two and a half lengths further back. Flying Prince was fourth, followed by Pegaway, Royal Doulton, Prince Val and The Hawk. Detailed results:—.
