FIRE AT QUARRY.

MACHINERY DESTROYED.

FIFTY MEN LOSE WORK.

EFFECT ON RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

WHANGAREI, Thursday*

The crushing buildings, plant and machinery at the Public Works Department's quarry at Taruroa, 17 miles from Whangarei, were destroyed by fire early this morning.

The quarry is the largest in North Auckland, and it had an up-to-date plant. About 50 employees will now be out of work, in addition to men engaged in handling metal on railway and road construction works. The works which will be most affected by the destruction of the quarry machinery are the railway between Kirikopuni and Dargaville, and various road works in Hobson and Otamatea Counties.
