LOCAL BODIES.
NEW LYNN BOOUGH COUNCIL
A meeting of the above council was held Inst evening. The Mayor (Mr. C. F. Gardner) presided.
Water by Measurement.—A letter was received from the Department of Internal Affairs advising of an early Order-in-Council authorising the borough of New Lynn to charge for all water supplied by measurement if desired.
Storm Water Drainage—A special report was received from the works foreman concerning storm water culverts in the Kelston areas, particularly the area that recently amalgamated with the borough. Tiie present storm water pipes were too small, and, consequently, the roads and footpaths suffered damage. Owing to the large amount of work involved, the council deferred the matter until the next financial year.
Kelston Commission.—A letter was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs stating that the report of the Kelston Commission was under consideration, and the award w6uld be published at an early date.
MANUREWA TOWN BOARD. The Manurewa Town Board held its fortnightly meeting last evening, the chnirman (Mr. Goo. Gallaher) presiding. Messrs. W. Ferguson and F. Barnard were absent. Railway Service. —The clerk reported receipt from the Auckland Provincial Federation of Women's Institutes of several copies of a petition for circulation. The petition was addressed to the Minister of Railways requesting an extension of the availability of workers' tickets from 8 a.m. to 9 i.m„ on the grounds that the present restriction caused undue hardship to a large number of those concerned. It was decided to distribute the lists throughout the district. Jellicoe Park.—The Manurewa Rugby Football Club forwarded 15/2, representing 25 per cent of the total gate receipts at matches played 011 the Jellieoe Park Reserve, during last season. The amount was accepted. Traffic Inspector.—The Main Highways Board wrote intimating its decision to contribute £1 for £1 towards the cost of providing a traffic inspector operating under a co-operative scheme. It was decided to acknowledge the letter and inform the Highways Board that Manurewa district is working in conjunction with several other local bodies, and the matter will be dealt with at Otahuhu.
Noxious Weeds.—The noxious weeds inspector (Mr. W. Goodgcr) reported that the work of clearing untidy properties throughout the district was well in hand. Mr. C. A. Faweett referred to the condition of several properties in Russell Road as being disgraceful, and expressed the opinion that something should be done further than sending out notices. The chairman advised the inspector to take immediate action against offenders. 1
Dog Tax.—lt was decided that the dog tax for the coming year be similar to last year, viz., cattle and sheep dogs 2/G, all other dogs 5/.
Telephone Service.—Mr. W. T. Cox drew attention to the fact that the district urgently reonired a continuous telephone service similar to that in operation at Papatoetoe and Papakura. He stated that there were sufficient subscribers to warrant such a service. He understood tl at an application would be reonired, signed by 75 per cent of the subscribers, and that the additional charges would be £1 per year for private subscribers, and £2 for- businesses. On Mr. Cox's motion, it was decided to apply to the Department for this facility.
