WESTPORT MEETING.

A COUPLE TO REMEMBER

The Westport Trotting- Club's meeting will open the Coast circuit in the south on Boxing Day. These meetings are very popular and invariably attract a strong contingent of Canterbury horses. A couple who are not likely t-j be overlooked by backers are: Progress Handicap, Loretta Napoleon; Dennison Handicap: Royal Iroquois.

Auckland Well Represented,

The Wairarapa Trotting Club's meeting which opens on Thursday will arouse interest in Auckland as several horses from here have gone down to compete. No doubt all will get goo backing but Arachne's prospects in the Cup read well.

A £3000 STAKE.

FOR 2.15 OR BETTER HORSES.

AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP,

The total prize money for the Australasian championship contests will be £3000 from which will be taken the amounts lor heat winners. Only horses holding a money winning record of 2.15 or better will be eligible. The first three horses in each heat over each particular distance will be in the finals and in each of the three of these points will be scored to decide the winner. The first contest for the championship will be over one mile and the half; the second over one mile and a quarter and the third over two miles. The programmes will be very diversified. The horses will score up in the same way as they did in thj previous championship contests held. The grandeur of the historic and memorable occasion of the conduct of these championships will be something never before approached in the history of trotting, writes the secretary, Mr. A. E. Flint It will mark the apex of the sport in the Southern Hemisphere. Mere words cannot adequately convey a real impression of the excellency of Brennan Park. It is a grand racecourse that must be seen to be appreciated. The lighting scheme is the most wonderful of its kind in the world. There is a total absence of glare from naked lights and the trotting track unwinds to the eye like a ribbon of silver. On that fine track it is safe to predict that some of the grandest trotters and pacers in the world will eventually match their speed and it will not be surprising if the rich stake money mentioned attracts most of the champions of the eastern states and New Zealand to the capital of the west. The association is making arrangements for train and steamer concessions and they will make the owners and trainers of horses competing in the championships their hotel guests during their stay in Perth. Owners of horses in the eastern states and Xew Zealand need not. feel apprehensive concerning the conditions of Brennan Paik track. It is wide enough to accommodate the largest of fields without placing the backmarkers at a disadvantage while tlio circumference, only S8 yards short of half a mile with a total absence of anything approaching sharp turns enables a horse to travel at too speed from start to finish. The two previous Australasian championships held in Perth, which were won by the New Zealand representatives, Great Hope and Taraire, produced mile ratings of 2.12 2-3, but those hitherto unthought of times will be eclipsed at Brennan Park. It is a champion course worthy of the champion trotting horses of the world.
