POLICE RETIREMENT.
SERGEANT J. A. CRUICKSHANK,
A well-filled wallet of notes was the tangible expression of goodwill towards Sergeant Cruickshank last night, at a public presentation in the Onehunga Borough Council Chambers. He is now on leave, and nominally retires on February 5, but his successor, Sergeant D. J. O'Neill, is already in charge of the district, and he was welcomed by the Mayor of Onehunga, Mr. E. Morton, after he had made the presentation to the retiring sergeant, on behalf of the residents.
In complimenting Sergeant Cruickshank on having gained the confidence and esteem of the residents during the nine years he had been in charge of the district, the Mayor was supported by Mr. Kirk Jones, president of the Onehunga Chamber of Commerce; Mr. E. V. Sutherland, for the Manukau Licencing Committee; Mr. D. A. Sutherland, for the justices of the peace; Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P.; Rev. D. D. Scott; Constable Poll, a member of the staff; and Mr. Walter C. Hill, a member of the fire Board.
The recipient cordially thanked the idonoTS for their recognition of his work, and said that he could never wish to be associated with more considerate local bodies than he had met' in Onehunga, and he and Mrs. Cruickshank had decided to stay there for the rest of their lives. He was glad to know he had gained the confidence of the people in discharging his duties, and he was passing on the work to hi 6 successor with the assttrance that there was an efficient staff.
The Mayor also hade farewell to Mr. C. W. Ross, postmaster at Onehunga. who is retiring from the service, and •will live at Nelson. He assured him of a warm welcome if he returned to Onehunga, for they all appreciated his splendid work during his five years amongst them. The Mayor was supported by Mr. Robert Buchanan, who spoke for the Bowling Club and Orphans' Club, and other speakers endorsed' the expressions of goodwill towards the retiring postmaster and Mrs. Ross.
