KING'S COLLEGE
The. news that it is proposed to put King's College under the control of the St. John's College Board of Governors has a general interest. King's College ranks as a private school; that is to say, it is not a State school. It is, however, a public school as the term is used in England, and it long since ceased to be a private school in the proprietary sense of the word. It has become an institution whose achievements are followed with interest by the community, and occupies a position in this city and province similar to that of College and Christ's Cbllege. It is a Church school in that the boys are taught religion according to the tenets of the Church of England, and the beautiful memorial chapel, a building of which Auckland as well_ as everybody connected with King's should be proud, is the centre of school life. The proposed change would place' the school definitely- under the control of the Church of England, but no change in the spirit of its religious education would be involved. e great benefit to the school would'be the placing of its finance on a firmer basis. It now lacks the handsome endowments of Christ's College and Wanganui College. The St. John's College Board has a substantial sum which could be applied to a school under its control, and a private endowment has been promised. Naturally both sides- wish to examine the question carefully in all its aspects, but it seems probable that the proposal will be accepted, and we feel sure that this would be for the benefit of the school. An assurance is given-that.there will be no change in traditions that the work of years has built up.
