BROPHY'S RESIGNATION.

SEQUEL TO BREAKDOWN. "INTRIGUE WITH ACTRESS" DENIED. FIXE SERVICE TO EXPEDITION. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. Commenting on the cable about Mr. Richard Brophy, formerly second in command of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, Messrs. Tapley and Co., base agents for the expedition, say there is no truth in tlio assertion that an intrigue with a Broadway actress caused Mr. Brophy's dismissal. He was not dismissed. He suffered a severe breakdown in Dunedin and during the period of his incapacity he was unfit to handle the expedition's affairs, so that his resignation was accepted. There was no question of misdemeanour, only unnecessary expenditure arising from Mr. Brophy's illness. The agents said Commander Byrd was, and is much concerned over Mr. Brophy's welfare and'future. In the early stages of the expedition Mr. Brophy proved an efficient organiser and rendered inestimable service.
