A GREAT TRANSPORT SCHEME.
For many years past the evils of unnecessary and wasteful competition have asserted themselves in the metropolitan transport system, and while the Baldwin Government was. still in office, the London Coimty Council, along with the tramway and bus companies now operating, had devised a scheme for "unified control" and submitted it to Parliament. But the new system was still to be in the hands of directors practically free from, public control, and when Labour came into power after the elections these proposals were thrown.out. Now. the Minister of Transport has informed Parliament that he will Submit a scheme "for the unification of all the London traffic services under public ownership." . It is impossible to say how far these proposals will go or what precise form they are to take. But remembering that Mr. Morrison, as President of the Labour Party Conference a few months ago, declared that his party is irrevocably bound "to bring in the Socialist Commonwealth," it certainly would appear that this proposed measure is to be regarded as a first instalment of that "Socialism in our time" which Labour's "leftwingers" so persistently demand. If that is the case, it will be necessary for the Liberals to consider seriously their declared intention of joining hands with the Conservatives to resist any attempt on the part of the Government to impose a Socialistic programme on the country.
