LONG FACES.
HARM TO CHRISTIANITY. DEADLIER THAN ATHEISM. "The long face and the sallow complexion have done more harm to the cause of Christianity than the combined writings of avowed atheists, like Ingersol, Thomas Paine and Joseph McCabe," declared the Rev. Charles Chandler, when toeing farewelled to-day at a luncheon tendered in the Y.M.C.A. concert hall by the Auckland Optimists , ' Club. The gathering was a combined farewell to the Rev. Mr. Chandler, last year's president of the club, who is about to take up mission work in connection with the Labour party in Sydney, and Mr. A. L. Salmond,. a foundation member and officer of the club, who is returning to. Dunedin. Both were farewelled by the club president, Mr. C. J. Rennie, the president of the Y.M.C.A., Mr. C. H. Furness, and other speakers, and, presentations were made. In his reply, the Rev. Mr. Chandler said he knew of no happier band of men seeking to live in accordance with Christian ideals than were the members of the Auckland Optimists' Club, a statement which, was endorsed 'by Mr. Salmond.
