SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A farewell gathering will be liekl this evening at the. Auckland Grammar School in honour of Miss Morrison and Miss Henderson, whose work in education in Auckland is so well known and at which it is hoped that there will be a representative gathering. * *• • f.■ J. A very pleasant evening was given by Mrs. B. Tweedie at the residence of Mrs. X. Warnock, Hcrne Bay, to celebrate Master Charles Tweed's birthday. Among tho guests were Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Keffe, Mrs. Hair, Mrs. Lascelles, Misses B. Alexander, D. Stonestreet, S. Longlev, G. Thode, M. McLelland. Dancing and competitions were the order of the evening, and Miss D. Birins played pianoforte solos which were much appreciated. * * * * The Xew Zealand Institute of Photography held their initial social gathering at the Lewis Eady Hall last evening, when a programme of excellent talent helped to provide an enjoyable evening. The president, Mr. T. H. Ashe, and Mrs. Ashe, received the guests, the latter wearing a beige ensemble, Among the guests were Mr. Jordan, M.P., and Mrs. Jordon, who was in a frock of blue and silver lace. Vocal, musical and dance items were rendered by the New Zealand Four, J. Simpson, Roy Dormer, E: Mannall and Duncan Black, and Misses Joan Welsh, Muriel Xeedham, Ethel Needham, Jones and Molly Wallcott. * # * * A social and dance arranged by the Riverhead School Committee was held in the Public Hall on Saturday evening, in aid of the funds for the annual school picnic. The chairman of the committee, Mr. Levy, controlled the floor arrangements, and excellent music was supplied by Mr. and Mrs. Poland Gould. An iced cake, made and presented by Mrs. Blythe, was tied for by Mr. Heffon and Master Pay, while a box of sweets presented by Mrs. Simpson was won by Mr. B. Levy. Great interest was shown in the result of the competition, which had for its prize the electric kettle presented by the Waitemata Power Board, the winner being Mr. R. Gould. A dainty supper was prepared and served by the wives of the school committee. « * * * » A large number of guests assembled on Saturday in the clubroom of the League of Penwpmen, Paykel's Building, at a matinee musicale given by Miss Renee Satchwell, L.R.A.M. The programme was provided by some of her pianoforte pupils and Miss Veda Hutchinson, L.A.8., whose singing of several delightful songs charmed the audience. The playing of the youngest pianist, little Miss Marian Myers, and the work of Mr. Eldred Sealy and Miss Mavis Hewson, L.A.8., were admired, Other performers were Lady Anne Walpole, -the Misses Noel Whitcombe, Margaret Sinclair, Catherine Webb, Nancy Arthur, Molly Hargreaves, Joan Booth and Grace Piggot, and Masters Douglas Keesing and Brian Ellis. The room was gay with brightly coloured flowers.. Afternoon tea was served after the performance. Amongst those present were: The Countess of Orford, Mrs. Satchwell, Mr. and Mrs. J. Ellis, the Rev*, and Mrs. W. Piggot, Mr. and Mrs. Keesing, Mesdamcs Duncan, Buchanan, Whitcombe, Arthur, Sinclair, Wilson, Myers, Webb, Hardley, Booth, Cahill, Hewson Hill, Letcher, Wilson, Lamont, Sealey and Hargreaves; the Misses Latimer Lamont. E. Hewson, H. Hardley, B. Arthur, D. Kissen and B. Cahill.

A kitchen evening -was held at Mr. G. Sherry's residence, Dominion Road, on Saturday evening, in honour of Miss R. Ashdown's approaching marriage. Among those present were: Miss R. Ashdown, wearing black lace and silver; Mrs. T. Sherry, cinnamon floral crepe de chine; Miss E, Chalmers, fawn silk lace; Mrs. C. Turton, black georgette and cream lace; Mrs. Mitchell, navy crepe de chine lemon; Mrs. R. Herd, blue taffeta; Mrs. Paull, gold lace; Miss Jones, blue taffeta, pink trimmings; Mrs. Matliieson, navy crepe de chine; Mrs. Mann, black georgette; Mrs. G, Sherry, fawn satin; Mrs. Mathews, pink georgette; Miss N. McAneny, blue satin; Mrs. Ashdown, black beaded georgette; Miss Alsison, pale blue georgette; Miss Huckstep, pink floral satin; Mrs. T? McAneny, black satin. * * • A banquet to close their activities for the present year was given by the Women's Progressive Club on Saturday evening at the Y.W.C.A. rooms. A large number of guests, included Miss Jean Begg and Miss Bentham, Sister Bessie and Mr. C. Farr, who had been live speakers of the club during the year. The usual toasts were honoured. Miss Begg, in proposing the toast of the Progressive Club, spoke of the wonderful growth of this young institution since its inception early this year. Mrs. Ferguson, president, responded in happy vein. Those taking part in the programme were: Song, Mrs. Walker; song, Miss Scott; song, Mr. Wright; song,- Master Noble; and elocutionary items T>y Mrs. Topp; pianoforte solo, Mr. Rexton; pianoforte duet/ Mrs. Phethean and Miss Benfell. Mr. Norman Tait, well-known as the "Fun Doctor," contributed largely to the delight of all present. Mr. Sanders gave humorous items. Accompanists were Mrs. Phethean. Mrs. Forest and Miss Purdie.

An impressive ceremony twill take place to-morrow at St. Mary's Cathedral, when the Archbishop will receive from the returned soldiers the wreath which has been lying at the Cenotaph and after dedicating it place it in St. Mary's Church for all time. It is the wreath which was placed on the Unknown Soldier's grave in Westminster, and which has been allowed to be removed and brought to New Zealand for this purpose. After the service for the Mothers' Union, they will be the guests of the Archbishop and Mrs. Averill at Bishopscourt at a garden party. # * * ♦ The pupils of Miss Marguerite D. Haresnape entertained a large number of parents and friends on Saturday afternoon at a private recital in the Lewis Eady Hall. The hall had been charmingly decorated with hoops, from which hung trailing wistaria, while on the stage large bowls of colourful Iceland poppies and sweet peas were arranged. Miss Haresnape received her guests in a dainty frock of floral chiffon, with which she wore a very smart picture hat with drooping brim. An excellent programme was given in which the pupils were assisted by the Misses Doris and Bessie Messer, Sybil Dorothy Taylor, and Mr. Lewis Winthrop. At the conclusion of the afternoon Miss Haresnape was presented with a beautiful box of chocolates and a charming bouquet by her pupils. * » * * Court Edith Cavell held their usual quarterly social on Thursday. The dis--trict officers were present for the installation of officers, and Bro. King presented Sister Brain with her Past Chief Ranger's honours. Other courts were well represented, amongst them being officers and members of Court Maid Marion, Court Pride of Newmarket, Court Pride of Onehunga, Court Zealandia, Court Nil Desperandum, Court Pride of Ellerslie, and Court Papatoetoe. Dance music was supplied by Mrs. Siebert. Mr. Billings gave songs. Among those present were: Mrs. Kelsall, wearing peach taffeta, relieved fawn georgette; Mrs. F. Backhurst, fawn crepe de chine; Mrs, G. Couch, Viavy blue georgette; Mrs. J. Oates, brocaded crepe de chine; Mrs. H. Bae, black crepe de chine and lace; Mrs. "C. Smith, floral silk; Mrs-. V. Eraser, floral crepe de chine; Mrs. P. Jamieson, mauve taffeta and silver; Mrs. Chester, black satin and lace; Mrs. Cook, navy crepe de chine; Mrs. Sullivan, olue silk; Mrs. F. Brain, navy crepe de chine beige; Mrs. McPike, navy blue silk;_ Miss P. Gargen, eau de nil crepe de chine; Miss E. Smith, black satin and velvet; Miss Orger, black silk; Miss P. Rae, green crepe de chine; Miss E. Backburst, gieen crepe de chine; Miss Gwcn Brain, vieux rose crepe de chine; Miss D. apricot crepe de chine; Miss R. Couch, blue figured georgette; Miss K. Couch, red" figured georgette; Miss laddy, apricot crepe de chine. • » * * Arrangements have boon made for a two day's fair to be held in the Ponsonby school grounds on December 6 and *7, to raise funds for indoor equipment! The effort is under the direction of Mrs. A. Follick, assisted by a ladies' committee. Secial attiactions in connection with the fair will be a queen carnival, a babv show and novelty parades. The Ponsonby Boys' band will be in attendance. Mr. M. J. Savage, M.P., will perform the opening ceremony. - ; .
