BOY KILLED.
ACCIDENT AT REMUERA.
STRUCK BY CRICKET BALL.
WALKED HOME ATTEK INJURY
DIED EARLY THIS MORNING. Arthur Desmond Whitley, aged 14 years, eon of Mr.' and Mrs. R. S, Whitley, of 9, Vincent Avenue, Remuera, died suddenly this morning as a result of being struck by a cricket ball when playing at the Remuera School yesterday afternoon. When school was dismissed for the day Whitley and a companion stayed behind to play cricket. Whitley was batting and the other lad was bowling to him. A ball kicked after it was pitched, and, rising sharply, struck Whitley 011 the side of the head. He fell to the ground, but recovered sufficiently later to walk home. Dr. J. H. Lawry was called in at 5 o'clock, and attended him, but he died at 1.30 this morning. Fatal accidents in connection with cricket are extremely rare, and the present case is made more remarkable by the ifact that only two players were engaged at the time. After the accident the lad appeared to recover, but after he reached his home complications set in and he gradually sank. An inquest is to be opened to-morrow.
