"Tuffy" Griffiths emerged from second-rate class into being a contender for the highest heavy-weight honours when he defeated Paolino Uzcudun in seven savage rounds. Charles Barron, assistant referee of the fight, was killed an hour afterwards, but before he died he fatally wounded James Walsh, fight promoter. Barron fell foul of Walsh for awarding the sixth round to Griffiths, and after the fight Walsh attacked Barron, breaking his nose. Barron and a friend secured a gun and found Walsh with three members of his gang in a restaurant. A revolver duel ensued in which both contestants fell.
