TWO EDENDALES.
CHANGE OF NAME WANTED. TO ALLAY PUBLIC PREJUDICE. With a petition signed by 1300 residents of the district, a deputation waited on the Mount Albert Borough Council last evening to ask that the name of Edendale should be changed to Sandringham.
The spokesmen of the deputation assured the council that they were not insisting on the new name being Sandringham, as long as the old one was changed. Through there being another Edendale in the South Island, much confusion was caused in the delivery of mails, they said, and the chief postmaster at Auckland strongly recommended a change of names. Such names as had been suggested were already on
the postal directory, and the only one that could be thought of that would not be a duplication was Sandringham.
It had also been suggested that there was more chance of a post office being built in the district if the name was changed, the department being unwilling to build a second post office which would have the same name as one in the south.
Another aspect put forward was that a change of name would greatly increase property values in the district. In the past, Edendale had been notorious for its floods, and though the drainage system had altered that, the prejudice remained in the public mind. With a change of name the old prejudice against the district would be destroyed. At present, the speakers stated, it was very difficult to let or to eell a house in Edendale, and values were about £50 lower than in the rest of Mount Albert.
■ When the deputation had placed its evidence before the council, it was decided that the question ehould be diecuseed by the joint committees.
