Lady Quex, who is engaged in the Cheltenham Handicap at Takapuna next Saturday, has been working on the North Shore-course during the past few days. H. Gray has been engaged to ride her in the sprint race at the end of the week. •

The Lamb has made good as a hurdler very quickly. He had his first race at the Ellerslie spring meeting and later scored at Waikato, while on Saturday he annexed the Kopaki Hurdles at Te Kuiti in good style, after being one of the leaders all the way. Yesterday he had 11.6 to carry and finished third. The Lamb will win good hurdle races later on.

Hipo, despite his years, still retains a deal of his .old brilliancy. At Te Kuiti he put in a great run in the straight and galloped over everything at the finish, to win nicely and return a long price. Yesterday in the Waitomo Handicap he,was lying third as they turned for home and attempted to come through between the leaders, but was' disappointed and lost ground. He again made another great run and got in f? O nt 50 yards from the post, but The Lover and Ohmemun came with a great rattle on the outside to dead-heat half a length m front of him. Hβ is now eleven ■years, but is not -nearly finished yet.

'• The Day Comet— Lady Ridicule two- £ year-old, which has been working at |c Ellerslie under 2sT. Cunningham's charge, £ has been leased to a patron of A. Cook's is stable, and was railed to Te Awamutu S last week. '< ■ _____ A half brother to the defunct Joiie Money, by Prince Meriwee from Jolie Fille, has recently commenced work at Ellerslie. He is a well furnished two-year-old who is better grown thau Jolie Money was at the same age. ' I Ridgemount was having his second race this season when he won at Te 3 Kuiti yesterday. He was always handy » and, taking charge in the straight, scored T very nicely. He is among those carded for the Takapuna meeting and should be . difficult to dispose of there. Awarere was started on the first day of the Te Kuiti meeting, being made favourite for the Stewards' Handicap. He began very slowly and was one of the last, all the way. Awarere seems to have lost a good deal of his brilliancy recently. The two-year-old filly Manona, by Peach Brandy from Lethargic, who had been off colour during the past week or two, died during the week' end. She had been suffering from internal trouble, and despite every care and attention ny W. J. Hawkins failed to rally. Ti Tree does not appear -to stay too well. She won the* Puketutu Handicap, seven furlongs, at Te Kuiti comfortably on Saturday and in consequence she was well supported for the Waitonio Handicap, two furlongs further, yesterday. She was prominent all the way and was one of the first to turn for home, but failed to see it out and finished fourth. Paganelli was taken oft" at Feilding when being brought back to Te Rapa, after competing at the New Zealand Cup meeting, and will be a starter in the Feilding Stakes on Saturday. His trainer, M. J. Carroll, left for Feilding last night to supervise his final preparation. This trainer will probably have Macroom and Glena Bay racing at the Takapuna meeting. Pompeius was allowed to go out at a long price in the Hack Cup at Te Kuiti yesterday, but he Avon in brilliant fashion. * Glena Bay was in froni, at the distance, just heading a bunch, when Pompeius came with a great run on the outside and completely silenced all opposition. It was a surprising performance for a 'chaser and he has only to repeat that form in a big hurdle race to be very [hard to beat.

Tlie Lover had not had a race from the Pakuranga meeting till he competed in the Tc Kuiti Cup on Saturday. He did not show up prominently in that race, but it improved him greatly for his second day's engagement —the Waitomo Handicap. He and Ohinemuri came with a great run in the straight to deadheat for first place. The Lover is a good horse when right and is about at his best now.

Leitrim finished third in the Takapuna Plate last season and is engaged in the same event on Saturday. This horse showed exceptional speed when he finished second to Gold Money in the Visitor's Handicap at the Great Northern meeting and by 'his effort in the Farewell Handicap at Te Kuiti yesterday, when he came from a long way back to get second to Ridgemount, he will again be difficult to dispose of.

Town Bird has a lot of pace and in the. Stewards' Handicap at Te Kuiti on Saturday he jumped away smartly and had a big break on the field as they crossed the top and entered the straight. He just lasted long enough to win by a head from Taku Tama, who would have got the verdict in another stride. Yesterday he drew out across the top in the Farewell Handicap and was .first to turn for home, but when tackled half-way down the straight was unable to go on with it. He had 201b more on his back than on the first day.

The Swell is a fine, upstanding sort aiid he created a good impression among Aucklanders who saw him at the Te Kuiti meeting on Saturday and yesterday. In the Te Kuiti Cup he finished second to Hipo, but yesterday he lost ground at the turn going out of the straight and though he made a good effort when the field straightened up for the judge, he was unable to sustain it and finished last. The turning course was not in his favour, but he will do much better when ho gets on to a more roomy track. He is engaged at the Takapuna meeting.

Macroom showed a return to form when she finished second to Sir Russell over a mile at the Waikato meeting, while at Te Kuiti on Saturday she finished within a neck of Ti Tree. She was allowed to go out at a good price in the Flying Handicap yesterday, and though she began rather slowly, soon made up her ground, being handy to the leaders as they turned for home. She and Billikins then drew out and she won in easy fashion at the finish. Macroom will be hard to beat again before long, and it has to be remembered that she has shown winning ability up to a mile and 110 yards.

Lady's Boy was made favourite for the Te Kui'ti Cup on Saturday, and jumping away smartly was one of the leaders as they reached the turn going out of the straight, but Black Maire, who was inside him, carried him off the course and he lost several lengths.. Despite that fact, he made up his ground and was in front half-way down the straight, but failed to withstand challenges by The Swell, and later by Hipo, though there was less than a length between the three placed horses. Only for being carried out wide as they left the straight, Lady's Boy would have been a much tougher proposition. When competing in the Farewell Handicap yesterday he fell.
