POLITICAL ASSOCIATION.
A NEW ORGANISATION.
NOT A NEW PARTY.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) "WELLINGTON, Friday. The first meeting of members of the New Zealand Political Association was presided over by Mr. Edwin Salmon, who spoke of the success achieved by the association since its inauguration last August. He said the membership was extremely satisfactory, and rapidly increasing. The object of the association was not to form a new party but to induce citizens of attainment to offer themselves as candidates for Parliament. It was extremely gratifying to report that an unusually large nural.T of women had been enrolled as members.
Wellington so far had been the only centre in which efforts had heen made to enrol members, but later it was intended to form branches in the three other centres, with sub-branches in various electorates.
There was an unusual feature about an assault case which came before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court at Wellington yesterday, the four persons concerned, three men and a married woman, being practically deaf and dumb. One of the men was charged with having assaulted the woman in the kitchen of her house on a recent Sunday morning. The -woman alleged to have been assaulted spoke a little in answer to some of the questions put to her. but when she was unable to understand or speak, written questions were put to her, and these she answered in -writing. A similar procedure was adopted in the case of the visitor to the house who was called as a witness. The charge was dismissed.
