ROLL OF HONOUR.
WAR MEMORIAL APPEAL
CITIZENS' OPPORTUNITY.
MOVEMENT SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED.
The unanimous decision of the Auckland '"Returned Soldiers' Association to moke an appeal for funds to provide a roll of honour at the War Memorial Museum lias been enthusiastically approved bv Press, and public. A sum of between £3500 and £4000 will be needed, and the support of all classes of the community is asked. "He gives twice who gives quickly." As announced in yesterday's issue, the Returned Soldiers' Association will have the support and active co-operation of the '-Auckland Star," which opened _ a subscription list immediately the decision to appeal for funds was made known. The fund was inaugurated with a donation of £100 from the "Star," and the returned men of the Auckland Mounted Rifles have offered to subscribe a total sum of £250, which is equivalent to £1 per member. Donations may be handed in at the "Star" office. Those sent by post or messenger should be enclosed in envelopes marked "Roll of Honour Fund," and addressed to the manager. Every subscription will be acknowledged daily. As the appeal is essentially of a representative character it is hoped that it will be supported in every part of the Auckland province. Subscriptions may be handed in to "Star" agents in all country centres, and they will be forwarded' to this office and duly acknowledged.
The roll of honour makes a special appeal as a collective memorial to which all classes of the community may subscribe. Permission has been obtained by the R.S.A. to erect a large inscribed scroll in the central court of the museum, biiilding, where it will' be a lasting tribute to the men who gave their lives that freedom might live. Honouring the .Cenotaph. Mr. K. H. Sharp, secretary of the association, writes to draw attention to the invitation which is issued to next-of-kin and relatives of deceased roldiers to file past the Cenotaph on the evening of the 28th, and to deposit wreaths thereon. Returned soldiers are to assemble and file past the Centotaph afterwards. "In London," says Mr. Sharp, "it is the general practice for men passing the Cenotaph at any time to raise their hats as a token of respect to those who- have passed on, and for people on any day, to place wreaths or flowers on the Cenotaph. , We wish to inaugurate a- similar custom in Auckland, also to give those returned soldiers who arc unable to be present in the afternoon, an opportunity of paying their tribute to their dead pals on the opening day."
