STILL UNSETTLED.

TROUBLE AT GLEN MASSEY.

MINERS REMAIN IDLE.

DISMISSAL OF A TRUCKER

The . dispute in connection with the Glen Massey mine is still unsettled. The actual cause of the dispute is that on Monday last a trucker named Cuthbert was absent from work. When he presented himself for work on the following morning he was informed by the underviewer of the mine that he was to go to the manager and get his time. The trucker informed the president of the union of the position, and a delegation waited upon the mine manager to discuss the reason for Cuthbert's dismissal. During the course of the discussion it was alleged that the under - viewer had made" the statement that Cuthbert.must not be reinstated at any cost. The manager acknowledged that ho had' no grievance against the trucker, and could give no reason why Cuthbert was dismissed. ,- : The delegation reported to a meeting of the union that it was impossible under the circumstances to arrive at a settlement, and, with that, the Glen Maesey mine ceased work.. .

It was further decided that the district council of the Miners' Union should be called in with a view to effecting a settlement.

On the arrival of the district council representative at Glen Massey, the manager was interviewed, but the result was abortive. Tim members claimed that clause 30 of the agreement under which they were working had beer, violated. The clause is as follows:. "Any. employee absenting himself from work for 'more thaii two days: without first obtaining the permission of the manager ehall be deemed to have left his employment." This clause was duly pointed out to the manager and it was claimed that, in view of the clause quoted, the trucker. had not violated the agreement. The district council was called together yesterday with a view to a settlement. ' The executive is in communication with the 'Waipa Colliery directors, and will probably meet them to-morrow.
