SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The Garden Club, Whangarei, spent a very interesting afternoon. at the residence of Mrs. Holmes on Monday. After being conducted by Miss-Holmes through the beautiful bush that adjoins ■ Mrs. Holmes' home, the ladies returned to the houee, where afternoon tea was dispensed. There were twenty-five ladies present, among them being Mesdames Holmes, A. R. Pickmere, Black, Foote, C. A. Care, Goodrich, Johnson, '*H. Nicholls, Gibbons, Taylor, Baird, Chandler and Misses Holmes and Stevens. .** • * The members of the commerce train were entertained in the. social hall of the Municipal Buildings, Dargaville, by the Dargaville Chamber of Commerce. Among the ladies present were: The Mayoress (Mrs. F. A. Jones), Mrs. W. G. Whitmore, Mrs. A. E. Harding, Mrs. Edwin Harding, Mrs. C. A. Jenkins, Mrs. D. L. Ross, Mrs. J. C. Fussell, Mrs. H. B. The second anniversary dance of the Court Pride of Papatoetoe branch of the Ancient Order i of Foresters was held in the Renown Hall, Papatoetoe, There was an attendance of 70. Members from the Court Star of the South (Otahuhu) and of the Papatoetoe branch of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows were welcomed by Mr. J. Long, chief ranger. Music was provided by Kiddell's Orchestra and an extra was played during the evening by Miss Joan Piggin. Mr. J. Tidmarsh, past chief ranger, and Mr. T. McGowan, sub-chief ranger, were in control of the arrangements. The supper arrangements were carried out by Mr. W. A. Nesbitt and Sister W. A. Mackay.
Mrs Heath Preest, of Tahora Avenue, Remuera, gave a delightful afternoon in aid of Myers Kindergarten The drawing room and lounge was a bower of spring flowers. Afternoon tea was served in the dining room, where the table was charmingly decorated with Iceland poppies in silver and cut glass bowls. The hostess received in a frock of sea blue georgette. Among the guests were: Mrs. R. Coleman, Mrs. W. Curtis, Mrs. H. J. Sellars, Mrs. A. Newdick. Mrs. J. Fuller, Mrs. G. Eady, Mrs. J. D. Webster, Mrs. F. Calline, Mrs. Kay Stratton, Mrs. F. Moran, Mrs. M. C. Bright, Mrs. J. Bailey, Mrs. W; Reath, Mrs. W. Wombwell, Mrs. W. Taylor, Mrs. F. Jeffries, Mrs. A. E. Macartney, MVs. J. Kassan, Mrs. C. G. Richerson, Mrs. R'. Srnallbqno, Mies M. Wells, Mrs. J. Hop wood, Miss M. Kanagah, Miss E. Hyauiason, Miss Q. Evens, Mrs. Warren. The sum of £6 10/ was raised.
On Saturday evening Mrs. J. Parsons gave a party to a large number of friends at her new house in Gore Street, Otahuhu. Card tables were arranged- in the drawing and breakfast rooms, and bridge and five hundred were enjoyed by those present. Mrs. Parsons received her guests wearing Oriental lame. Miss Trixie Parsons wore rose shot taffeta. Among those present were: Mesda-mes T. Clements, navy blue marocain; Par■ton, black georgette and lace inset; W. Pinhey, maroon velvet; G. McDell, navy crepe de chine; W. Humphries, floral : georgette; PI. Matthews, dove grey crepe ;de chine; Marton, black silk marocain; F. McDell, black crepe de chine and Spanish shawl; Rugg, /black crepe de chine; R. B. Todd, navy crepe de chine with beige; N. Walters, pink crepe de chine with coatee of silver lame; F. Leslie, silver lace and pink crepe de chine with black shawl; F. Grey, frock of black velvet with lace inset; Hasenger, powder blue crepe de chine and silver lace; Patton, navy crepe de chine; Gracie, black crepe de chine; Payne, green and embossed velvet; Misses Muir, powder blue shot taffeta; Carson, frock ;of jade green lace; Muir, royal blue vel- ■ vet with lace inset; Sage, duchess blue ;crepe de chine; Banks, navy georgette; B. Walker, black velvet; Parton, pale pink georgette and silver lace The successful players.in the bridge section were ■Mrs. N.- Walters', first for' ladies, and Mrs. Parton second, and' Mr. Parton first and Mr. Pinhey second. In the five hundred tournament Mrs. R. B. Todd and Mrs. W. Pinhey Avon the ladies' section, and Messrs. H. Capp and W. Humphries won the gentlemen's. ■ * * # *
A pleasant evening was spent in the Manurewa Parish Hall on Tuesday last, when a social and dance were tendered to Miss Marjorie Pendergrast in view of her approaching departure from the district. The function was organised by the Girls' Hockey Club and numerous other 'associations with.' which Mise Pendergrast had been actively connected during her stay; in Manurewa. The evening was spent in dancing interspersed with competitions, excellent music being provided by Miss Marie Darby, assisted by Misses K. Harris, J. Harris, S: Pegler, J. Donaldson """and R. Harris. The competition winners were: Miss D. Roberts and Mr. R. Harris. During an interval in the dancing, Mr. L. M. Pegler, on behalf of Miss Pendergraet's wide circle of friends, presented her with a fountain pen, and on behalf of all present expressed regret at her proposed departure. Pegler, npricot chenille georgette; Miss Jessie Harris, pink celanese malacca, Parisian shawl to tone; Miss Queen Kimber, black lace ensemble relieved with sequins; Miss M. Darby, white crepe de chine, silver trimmings; Mies Patricia Boseawen, blue crepe de chine; Miss Iris Robson, new spring green georgette with peach satin; Miss Gaenor Maxwell, menthe taffeta with silver lace; Miss M. Grindrod, green Aenille georgette diamante; Miss Stella Beaumont, peach georgette.
