LITERARY.

"In Search of Scotland" (Methuen), by Mr. H. V, Morton, whose books on English scenes are so popular, is reviewed on page 13. In an article on "The French Book Trade" in the "Publishers' Circular " Mr. D. M. Sutherland says that in French booksellers' shops there is no obligation to buy, and one may well spend an hour in a bookseller's and leave without having once been approached by an assistant. It is not uncommon to see such notices' as "Our employees are forbidden on pain of dismissal to ask customers to buy/' or "Come inside into the warm during the cold weather and examine our books." One has only to see, he adds, the crowded bookshops in the students' quarter of Paris, to which on Sundays, particularly during winter, it is almost impossible to gain entrance, to realise the success of this system, for if books are well displayed, sales are continuous.
