SIR ARCHIE WINS CUP.

ENVOY TAKES MAN ALA.

MR. T. IMPEY'S DOUBLE SUCCESS,

The spring meeting of the Whangare: Racing Club opened at Kensington Park yesterday, and there was a good attendance of spectators. The weather was fine though dull at the commencement and during the afternoon there were a couple of good showers. The track owing to recent rain, was on the sofl side, but nevertheless there was some interesting racing. During the running of the Hikurangi Handicap Barmarder who had won the Kensington Hack Handicap earlier in the day, got on to the heels of Gay Cockade just after the field turned into the straight", and fell, breaking his neck. An inquiry was held, and the stewards found it was accidental During the day the sum of £14,214 was put through the machine compared witl £14,399 for the corresponding day last season, a decrease of £185, - Surprise in Cup. When the field paraded for the Cup. Delightment, Maori Boy and Liaison were missing. It was a good betting race, with most money (£670) entrusted to High Pitch, while King Emerald (£490) and Le Choucas (£486) also had good support. Sir Archie, the winner, carried £92 and Thursby £117. When the field had settled down, Thursby was showing the way to Sir Archie, Le Choucas, Palmares,. High Pitch, Transformer, King Emerald and Wenday, and passing the stand they were racing in the same order. Along the back Thursby was two lengths" in front of Sir Archie, then came Palmares, Le Choucas and High Pitch, with Transformer last. High Pitch was running second to Thursby as they went across the top, followed by Sir Archie, Le Choucas and King Emerald. When they came into the straight, Thursby was still leading from Sir Archie and High Pitch, then came Le Choucas, Palmares and King Emerald. Sir Archie finished on best in the run home and beat Thursby by two lengths, with High Pitch two lengths and a half further back. Le Choucas was fourth, then came Wenday, King Emerald, Palmares and Transformer. Deadheat In County. De Aka did not fulfill her engagement in the County Handicap, and the bracket, Right and Left and Mineral ( £333) had most friends, with Sunny Morn ( £264) and Kildeer ( £202) next in the order of betting. At the start Right and Left got-caught in 'the tapes and took no part in the race, Furore was the early leader from Mineral; Kildeer, Blue Bonnet, and Lightwood, and as they ran along the top the order was Mineral, Furore, Kildeer, Blue Bonnet, Welcome" Home, and Cynique. They turned for home in the same positions, Kildeer drew out half way down the straight, where Cynique also put in a strong run to get up in time to make a deadheat with her. Mineral was twe and a half lengths away third. Blue Bonnet was fourth, with Furore, -Sunny Morn and Lightwood next. Favourite Wins Again. Roman Pearl declined her engagement in the Hikurangi Handicap, for which Imperial Prince, who was favourite, carried £555, while Gay Cockade (£496) and Red Lion ( £338) also got solid support. Diamond Queen, who ran second, lad only £39 10/ invested on her. Red Lion began best and led out of the straight from Imperial Prince and Diamond Queen. Going along the back the order was Red Lion, Valquette, Imperial Prince, Gay Cockade, Diamond Queen : Brampton and Bombarder. Red Lion kept his lead as they, crossed the top and was first into the straight from Imperial Prince and Diamond Queen, then came Gay Cockade, Bombarder and War Officer. Imperial Prince took charge in the run home and got the decision by half a length from Diamond Queen, who beat Gay Cockade by two lengths. Red Lion was fourth, then came Valquette.. War Officer, Royal Seagull and Brampton.

Envoy's Good Performance.

There were only five runners in the Manaia Handicap, and the public went for Lady's Boy, who had the services of H. Gray, entrusting him with £663, The Begum ( £415) and Envoy { £221), were next fancied. Envoy got chopped back at the start and lost ground. Lady's Boy l and The Begum began quickest and led along the back from Macroom, Envoy and Cymon. Envoy put in a fast run and was second to The Begum as they crossed the top, with Lady's Boy and Macroom together next. Envoy was first to turn for home from The Begum and Lady's Boy, and went on to win by a neck from The Begum, who beat Lady's Boy by a head. Macroom was fourth. It was a* good performance on tha part of Envoy. A Good Price in Final Event. The programme concluded with the Parahaki Handicap, for which Owairaka and Palmares 'were the only defections. Liaison (£399), Ti Tree (£391), Thursby (£328) and Maori . Boy ( £262) were best backed. Liaison and Quincoma were the early leaders from Ti Tree; Thursby, Maori Boy and Cynthia N. . Along the Dack was _ in charge, attended by Maori Boy, Hipo, Quincoma, Ti Tree and Thursby.
