WAR MEMORIAL LIBRARY.
WORK IN BACKBLOCKS. ; APPEAL BY MAYORESS; . . i A display of work representing, very wide activities was given yesterday by the War Memorial Library League in the Civic Theatre building. *i > .
Primarily organised in the interests of ■ returned soldiers, the leaguee now provides literature to backr block residents, it aids' children in the provincial hospitals, and the inmates of i philanthropic institutions in and ; near the city. Men in Public Works camps*' have also cause to be gratefulto it,'and it sends parcels' as far abroad as. Niue Island. ■ I .'.'..' - , The work of the league is carried on by voluntary labour, arid its activities include ' the making of scrap-books for children, the rebinding and distribution of books, and the making of toys. Many letters are received in the course of the year from women in the backblocks asking for aid, and to keep abreast of these requests the league finds its resources fully taxed. In furtherance of the work a garden party will be held in the grounds of <ihe home of Mrs. E. A. K.idd, at Epsom, on Saturday. The Mayoress made an appeal to housewives in particular to think of the league when they were spring-cleaning, and to ' keep any old books which, although useless to their owners, were just what the league required. Any such contributions would always be collected by the league, upon notification.
