TRAIN CONCESSIONS.
SUGGESTED EXTENSION. SUBURBAN WORKERS' TICKETS. A proposal that the hours .during which workers' concession tickets may be used should be extended to 9 a.m., has been submitted to the General Manager of Railways, Mr. H. H. Sterling. The suggestion originated in a letter from the ■ Greenhithe branch of the Women's Institute to the Papatoetoe Welfare League. A large number of girl workers were unable to take advantage of the present concession, the institute said in a letter, which was received at a meeting of the Welfare League this week. It was stated further that many who were just as much entitled to be called workers as those at present receiving the benefit of workers' weekly tickets were deprived of the concession because they did not commence work until 9 o'clock. The league decided on the motion of the president, Colonel S. J. E. Closey, to submit to the General Manager of Railways a request that all bona fide workers using the trains arriving in the city before 9 a.m. should be allowed to travel on the ordinary workers' ticket. Many of those concerned, it was added, received less wages than workers using the early trains, and in cases of families the extra cost was considerable. As a precaution, to prevent the abuse of the concession by the general public, workers could be required to produce a certificate from their employers. The support of the Papakura Chamber of Commerce, the Otahuhu Business Men's League and the Maunrewa Town Board, is being sought, and the proposal is also being submitted for consideration to the various Chambers of Commerce in the suburban areas of Wellington.
