UNDERGROUND EXPLOSIONS.

Mr. Holdsworth, chairman of the Power Board, in a statement published in your paper, is reported to have said: "At present it is necessary for water, drainage and gas pipes as well as power lines to run in the same channel and nobody can definitely state what has actually been the cause of certain explosions." He goes on to say, however, that the board was facing up to" an expenditure of £500,000 for the renewal of 23-J miles of cables. Unless the board is certain that its cables are at fault £500,000 is a large amount to spend on a remedy. Methinks the chairman doth protest too much. VERB SAP.
