AT THE MARTS.
CANADIAN APPLES ARRIVE. MORE STRAWBERRIES. There are few local apples now available with the exception of Sturmers. The first shipment of Canadian arrived on Monday and opened up in excellent condition. Lemons, hothouse tomatoes and bananas are in keen demand. There is a fair sale for strawberries at the prices quoted. Latest rates are as follow:— Apples—Sturmers, 9/ to 12/6 per case; Grannie Smith, 10/ to 14/; Delicious (Canadian), 20/; Jonathan, 16/ to 17/; Grimes Golden, 16/ to 17/; Mcintosh Red, 17/ to 18/; Cox Orange, 20/. Pears: Nellis, 16/ to 18/; Coles, 14/ to 18/; P. Barrys, 7/ to 10/. Tomatoes: Hothouse, 9d to 2/ per lb;. Lemons: No. 1, choice, 9/ to 12/ per case; mediums, 6/ to 8/. Oranges: Island repacks, 24/ to 30/; Sydney Valencias, 16/ to 22/6; Californian, 40/ to 44/; Poorman, 8/ to 12/. Strawberries: Captain Cook, choice, 1/6 to 1/9 per chip; 1/ to 1/4. Bananas: Repacked, ripe, 24/ to 25/; No. 2's. and medium, 16/ to 22/. Grapes: Californian, 25/. Cherries: Australian, 15/ to 21/. Passions: 22/ to 25/6. Pines, Australian, 12/6 to 14/6.
Field Produce. The market is very heavily supplied with cabbage, cauliflowers, new potatoes, and all root vegetables m season, lliere are also good suppliess of green peas. Ihe demand is fair. Quotations are a* Southern, 6/ to 8/ per ewt; new, to 2d per lb; onions, 14/ to 17/6 case; kumaras, island, 9/ to 9/6 per cwt, Tauranga, 6/6 to 8/6; cabbage 1/ to 5/ per sack; cauliflower, 3/ to 7/; swedes, 1/ to 1/6 bag; pumpkins, 12/ to L/ per cwt; green peas, 2M to 4%d per lb; beans, broad, to 3d per lb; French, 6d to 1/6; lettuce, 2/ to o/6 per case; cucumbers, hothouse, 4/ to 5/6 dozen; Sydney, 12/ to 16/ case; vegetable marrows, new season's, 4/ to 9/ dozen; cabbage, on benches, 1/6 to 2/6 dfeen; eaukflower, 2/ to 5/6; rhubarb, 1/6 to 9/8J spinach, 1/ ; pumpkins, 1/6 to 2/6 each; radish, 6d; spring onions, 4d to 1/ bundle, carrots, parsnips, beet and turnips, 8d to 1/4 per dozen; asparagus, 6d to 8d bundle; leeks, 3d to 4d bundle. Eggs and Butter. Hens' and ducks' eggs are both in plentiful supply. There is a fair demand for S', but poor for ducks', at the following rates for first quality:-Hen eggs, special grade, 1/3% per dozen; A grade 1/2 B grade, 1/1; ducks' eggs, special grade, A quality, 1/1; B grade, 1/. There are-moderate -supplies of farmers butter selling at 1/1 to 1/4 per lb.
. Prices for Poultry. At yesterday's auctions the supply of poultry'was fair, and the demand was keen for table birds. The prices paid remain about level.' Selling rates were as follow:—Cockerels, heavy breeds, prime, 6/ to 8/ each; not prime, 3/6 upwards; light breeds, prime, 4/ to 5/6; not prime, 2/6 upwards. Fat roosters, heavy breeds, prime, 2/6 to 3/6; light breeds, 2Mo':3/. Fat hens, heavy breeds, 2/9 to 4/; light breeds, 2/ to 3/. Pullets, heavy breeds, best, 4/ to 5/6; smaller, 2/6 upwards; light breeds, best, 4/ to 5/; smaller, 2/6 upwards. Drakes, young, prime, 3/ to 4/; smaller, 2/6 upwards; old, 1/6 to 2/6. Ducks, young, 3/ to 4/; old, 1/6 to 2/6. Cockerel chicks, heavy breeds, 4d to 1/; light breeds, 2d to 4d.
