TRANSACTIONS ON 'CHANGE. A BUSY CALL, RUN ON COMMERCIALS. GENERAL TONE LIVELY. A notable feature in local _ Stock Exchange business was the keen interest displayed by brokers at this _ morning's call, in a wide range of securities, with banks still a principal factor. It is a long while since so many sales _ have been finalised in the room at a single call. Outstanding was the demand for Commercial Bank of Australia. As recently as Thursday last these sold down to £1 5/6. This proved rock bottom, and by easy stages they reached £1 7/ on Saturday. This morning offers to sell at £1 7/9 brought eager responses from various parts of the room, and before the call had concluded no less than. ten parcels had changed hands at this figure. Although banks have definitely improved within the last few days, a sale of National Bank of Australasia, marking a drop of £1 4/6 since the last local sale on September 4, shows that there is a good deal of leeway still to be made up, if former levels are to be reached. Dalgety's have firmed further with buyers at £14 2/6. Local gas shares are keenly sought, with buyers at £1 4/10, and no sellers. Thames Gas are offered at 9/. More interest is being shown in Electrolytic Zincs, and buyers are now offering £1 13/9 for the ordinary, and £1 14/6 for the prefs. More activity is discernible in Government stocks and local bodies' debentures. The Noon Call. After the sudden burst at the first call business quietened clown, and only three reported sales were added to the list when members met for the second. Commercials eased again with buyers at £1 7/6. Waipa Collieries were offered at 14/9. Buyers of Bartholomew Timber advanced their offers to £1 0/9, whilst Breweries moved up 1/. Word was received that the directors of the English, Scottish and Australian Bank are recommending a final dividend payment of 7% per cent, making 12% per cent for the year. This is the usual allocation. Interest Rates. The return to the investor on his outlay, based upon the latest dividends and in the case of loans and debentures upon redemption at maturity, works out as follows for the latest sales:— PER CENT PER ANNUM.
