HAD EVERY CHANCE.
PADLOCK BEATEN' IN CUP TRIAL. While Padlock defeated all but Gold Jacket in the Cup Trial at Wellington on Saturday, the performance, in the .opinion of some who saw the race, is not likely to bring him into favour for the big Cup at Addington next week. Padlock is recognised as one of the most brilliant horses the Dominion has produced, and at a mile and a quarter he has no superior to-day. When the mixup occurred in the Cup Trial at Wellington near the home turn, and the prospects of four horses went out, Padlock was left with a clear cut lead in front, and it was hardly expected any horse in the race could give him a start and a beating in the run up the straight. Yet Gold Jacket did it, and as Gold Jacket was staying on the better at the end his chance of annexing the Cup appears the brighter of tfcc pair. It may be that Padlock was not seen at the top of his form, and the race will do him good, but to accept this is mere presumption, and there is no engagement for the son of Hal Zolock till he goes out for his heat in the Cup.
