SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The Ponsonby branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union met in St. Stephen's Hall on Thursday afternoon, when Miss Read presided. The meeting took the form of a "Bring and Buy' sale for the Willard Home, and resulted in £3 9/ being collected for this purpose. Afternoon tea closed a pleasant afternoon.

Mrs. F. G. Bilton, Lauriston Avenue, Remuera, gave a bridge party on Saturday afternoon, when the rooms were decorated with bowls of pink roses and other pretty spring flowers. Mrs. Bilton received her guests wearing Royal blue marocain. Among those present were: Mrs. Kirkwood, Mrs. Davenport, Mrs. Clifton, Mrs. Richardson, Mrs. HamiltonSmith, Mrs. Lamb, Mrs. Were, Mrs. Hagger, Mrs. Cowie, Mrs. Sherriff, Miss Law, Miss Crofts, Miss White, Miss Alexander, Miss Rennell, Miss Keith, Miss Moore, Miss Kirkwood, Miss J. Kirkwood, Miss Jennings, Miss A. Law. The first prize for progressive was won by Miss Jean Moore, the second prize by Miss M, Law, and consolation by Mrs. Davenport. The first prize for stationary bridge was won by Miss Kathleen Kirkwood, and the consolation by Miss Elsie Jennings.

Time passed pleasantly with games and dancing at an evening given by Mrs. Wm. W. Morton, at her residence, Aranui, Richardson Road, Mt. Albert, in honour of her daughter's (Mrs. G. A. McCulloch) coming of age. The room? were decorated with streamers, balloons, Iceland poppies, and sweet peas. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Wm. W. Morton, navy georgette; Mrs. G. A dance was held in Rieki.s' Hall, Taupo, in aid of the Church of England building fund. There was a crowded attendance. Prizes were awarded lor the best costumes. Supper was served to the children, and they went home. Their elders then took the floor for the rest of the evening. A satisfactory addition was made to the funds.

A delightful party was given by Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Baker, of Ardmore Road, Heme Bay, on Saturday, to celebrate the birthday of their little granddaughter Gwendoline. The dining room was prettily decorated with gay streamers and balloons, and in the centre of the table stood a large Christinas tree laden with novelties for all. The drawing room and hall were arranged with bowls of Iceland poppies and ferns. In the evening, game? and competitions were enjoyed. The distributing of novelties added to the children's. pleasure. Mrs. Baker received her guests wearing a pleated black crepe de chine.

A large number of tennis enthusiasts attended the opening of the Parnell Club on Saturday afternoon, the president Mr. R. J. Coats, assisted by the secretary, Mr. Victor Clay, welcoming the visitors. The ladies' committee served a delicious afternoon tea in the pavilion, which was decorated in maroon and "old flowers. Among the guests were Mrs. F. H. Pope, Mrs. E. Smith, Mrs. Herrick, Mrs. W. The ladies of St. Michael's Guild at Henderson held their annual bazaar in the Town Hall on Thursday. It was opened by Mrs. J. T. F. Mitchell, of Epsom. At the conclusion of the ceremony she was presented with a bunch of sea pinks by' Mies Doris Mitchell. Two pianoforte duets were given by Miss •Tudd of Kingsland, and Mrs. Vincent, of Henderson, the stalls were in charge of the following ladies:—Plain sewing, Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Ingham and Mrs. Harley; produce, Mrs. Owen Joues, Mrs. Mitchell; sweets, Mrs. Welsh and the Misses Massey; fancy stall, the Girte' Club, in charg'e of Mrs. Walsh and Mrs. Johnson; ice cream and drinks, Miss Ingham and Miss Vause; dolls house stall and fishpond, the Girls' Bible c:ass, under Mrs. Shreeves, Various competitions were held and won as follows:— Naming the bride, Mrs. McMasters; weight of ham, Mrs. F. Carter; cake, Mr. M. Morgan; and nail driving, Mr. T. Shreeves and Mr. F. Morris. The model dolls' house made by Mr. Shreeves was won by Mrs. Wells.

A large number of dancing couples went to Dixieland last night when Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith and his party were the guests of honour.! The Auckland Aero Club had lent a number of their model 'planes to be included in the decorative scheme, and these were suspended over the tables and dance floor. The club wings with an inserted monogram had been erected at the entrance to the dance floor and the dark creen of the palms was a fitting setting for the novel decorations. On the tables where the officials of the Aero Club and their wives were seated, bowls of lilies and gay spring flowers gave a bright touch to the cubicles. With the official party were: Mrs. Spencer Mason, who wore a frock of black georgette patterned in lemon and orange; Mrs. W. S. R. Bloomfield, frock of sandust lace; Mrs. J. Seabrook, amethyst shaded taffeta; Mrs. F. B. Cadman, shrimp tinted georgette with trimmings of diamante; Mrs. S. Andrew, ecru lace and georgette; Mrs. R J. Copley, floral georgette with pink floral pattern; Mrs. Trcssider (Singapore), rippled ninon in flame shade; Mrs. J C. Whitnev, frock of orchid crepe faille; Mrs. W. C.
