MAORI OVEN DUG UP.
DISCOVERED UNDER SCORIA.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)'
NEW PLYMOUTH, Sunday.
-An old Maori oven has been unearthed on the slopes of Mount Egmont, near the Stratford Hostel. It was n'der a bed of scoria, The stones of the oven were blackened and there was a considerable amount of charcoal about.
It is deduced that the mountain must have been in eruption since the advent of the Maori, because the scoria was superimposed on the oven. Hr. A. W. Burrell, of the Stratford Observatory, who has taken charge of the oven, says he is convinced that Egmont has been in eruption in comparatively recent times. Some years ago lie discovered scoria in the forks of matai and rimii ti'ees, showing that thu mountain had erupted while these tree- were growing and when they must have been of consideable size.
