WHEAT INDUSTRY.

PROTECTION UPHELD. ■

NON-PARTY DIVISION.

. TWO-TO-ONE FOR REPORT.

(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The discussion on the report of the Select Committee of the House of Representatives which recommended the continuation of the wheat and flour protective duties occupied several hours yesterday, but disclosed few points of fresh interest. The facts enumerated had been collected mainly from the evidence published during the committee proceedings, and the division, list showed an extraordinary mixture of parties. The minority of 20 members which supported Mr. T. W. McDonald's amendment, to refer the report back for further consideration, included eight Labour, seven Government and two Reform members, but what appeared the most interesting line of cleavage was the geographical. The supporters of the report, 50 in number, were exactly balanced, 25 on each side, these including the front-benchers of the three parties'.

The report, which was adopted, has no Legislative effect but is a guide to the Government. FOR THE AMENDMENT— 20.
