SALARY CUTS.
RESTORATION DEMANDED,
RAILWAY MEN PASS RESOLUTION
A mass meeting of employees of the Otahuhu railway workshops was held to urge the Government to restore the wage cuts, also to request Cabinet to consider the whole question. Some 600 employees attended the meeting and passed the following resolution unanimously:— "That this meeting of railway employees expresses its keen disappointment and surprise at the pronouncement of the Prime Minister and Minister of Railways that the wage cuts would not be restored. In view of the fact that our railways are constructed for the purpose of socially serving the needs of the people • and getting the country's goods to the most economic market, and are consequently the greatest developmental agency in the Dominion, we contend, that our wages should be determined by the service we are rendering this country and not by the year's operations. Last year, for example, the railways saved this country £15,000,000 by carrying freight for £5,000,000 which would have cost £23,000,000 had it been transported by motor."
