The' British Museum originated with a bequest by Sir Hans Sloane in 1753, when he directed that his library of 50,000 volumes should be handed to the Government. The library, with a collection of Roman antiquities and collections of manuscript was placed in Montague House, bought for the purpose. The mupeum was opened to the public in January, 1759. The present large building was rebuilt upon the site of the old.
