THE RICCARTON DOUBLE

i CUP AND STEWARDS'.

AFTER ACCEPTANCES

DECLARED.

THE FIELDS REVIEWED.

After acceptances were declared oil Friday last, twenty-three remained in the New Zealand Cup. However, Star Stranger has now been scratched for all engagements at the meeting. Historic now has 9.5, after his dual success in the Avondale and Mitchelson Cups, and he will create a weightcarrying record for the event if he succeeds, for the best performance in this direction so far was that of Count Cavour, who won with 8.13. Prince Humphrey (B.S) Wished fourth in the Avondale Cup, but was well beaten in the Mitchelson Cup. Concentrate (8.4) pleased with his efforts in the Metropolitan Handicap, one mile and five furlongs, at Eandwick, and also ran well in the Harcourt Cup, one mile and a quarter, at Trentham on Monday. These performances, taken in conjunction with irhis three-year-old form, make him out "to be a decided possibility, for the event. Count Cavour has fun some great races in the New Zealand and Auckland Cups, and with 8.4 would only need to be at his best to be" hard to beat. He has been going well at Riccarton, and recently ran third in the Rangiora Cup, one mile and a quarter, with 41b more. Cashier won the Marangai Handicap at Wanganui in his first start this season, and showed up for a good way in the Wainui Handicap at Trentham last Saturday. Seatown ran two good races at Trentham, and is nicely placed at 7.10. Yoma was apparently never sighted in the Wellington Handicap last Monday, but In the Shade won the event, and he is not overburdened with 7.9, which includes his 61b penalty. Hoy lake was third last season with 7.0, and has now 7.9. Ho seems to have raced fairly on the first day of the Wellington, meeting, but the question is whether he will- do his best on the day. If he does then he should again be in the money. Prodice (7.8) has only had two races this season, running second to Historic in the Avon>dale Cup, and winning the Members' Memorial well at Cambridge on Monday. Pride won the New Zealand Oaks, one mile and a half, last season, which is her best performance over a distance, but Chide (7.4) has done everything asked of him this season. He annexed the Ashburton Handicap, one mile and a quarter, and the Mosgiel Handicap of similar distance at Dunedin. The others do not appear to have much chance. Possibly just now the most favoured will be: Concentrate, Chide, Prodice, In the Shade, Cashier, and Seatown. The Stewards' Handicap. Paganelli (9.11) has been paid up for in the Stewards' Handicap, and even with that impost he will be hard to dispose of, for he put up a fine performance with 31b less at Trentham last Saturday in annexing the Shorts Handicap. Cimabue (9.4) will'also run well. He won the Nainai Handicap at Trentham on Monday with 9.0, and has 41b more to carry, but that should not stop him. Red Heckle (8.10) finished second to Silver Paper with 8.12 in the Electric Handicap at the recent Dunedin meeting, but seeing how the latter was beaten in the Shorts Handicap at Tren- ' tliam it does not make his performance a very good one. Eaglet has 31b more to carry than she was awarded in the Shorts Handicap at Trentham, but she did not start in the event. She has plenty of speed, and should run well. Arrow Lad (8.3) looks a likely sort after his third to Cimabue and' First Money in the Nainai Handicap at Trentham last Monday, and he should be an improved horse. Consent (8.3) showed up for a while in the Nainai Handicap at Trentham on Monday, which was his first race since scoring at Wanganui in September last. Goshawk and Goblin Market do not appeal, but Havering (5.3) does. He won well at Ellerslie after finishing second to- Consent at Wanganui. He was entered for the Wellington meeting, but was withdrawn before the handicaps were declared. 'S. Wliite Fang (S.O) won at Avondale, but failed at Trentham. Hunting Cry (8.0) is a useful three-year-old, while Great Star (7.13) will have a lot of friends. This horse has plenty of speed, and has recent form to command him. Last season he finished second to Cimabue in the Easter Handicap at Riccarton. Of the others Aspiring, Leader, Keddar, and Meadow Lark may be most favoured. Just now the most fancied may be: Cimabue, Paganelli, Havering, Great Star, Arrow Lad, and Eaglet. COMMENDATION. ANOTHER SYDNEY TRIP MOOTED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. Commendation was to have gone to Riccarton last night, but he has been scratched for all engagements at the New Zealand Cup meeting, a change of plans having J been decided upon. It is probable that G. Jones will take him across to Australia in the near future. MORE SCRATCHINGS. STAR STRANGER NOT A STARTER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.* CHRISTCHURCII, Wednesday.
