OBITUARY.

THOMAS W. CANE,

The death occurred at Christchurcli on Wednesday of Mr. Thomas Walter Cane, lecturer in English at Canterbury College. He had been ill for nine months. He was for 16 years English master at the Christchurcli Boys' High School and was appointed to the lectureship in 1911. MR. W. H. SMITH. The death has occurred at Palmerston North of Mr. William Henry Smith, a well-known newspaper proprietor, at the age of 75 years. Mr. Smith successively controlled the "Wairarapa News," now the "Wairarapa Times," which he founded with partner; the- "Manawatu Times," which he turned into a daily newspaper; . and the "Rangitikei Advocate," of which he was editor and manager until his retirement recently. He was a strong advocate of free trade, and in his early days was prominent as a cricketer and swimmer. He is survived by a widow and four daughters. Two sons predecesed him, one, Lieut. K. G. S. Smith, being killed at Passchendaele. MR. H. JEROMSON. At the age of 76 years, Mr. Henry Jeromson died at Palmerston North. He was born at Shetland Isles, and came to New Zealand 50 years ago, settling at Dunedin. About 18 years ago he moved to Palmerston North, where he had lived ever since. He is survived by Mrs. Jeromson and the following children:—Mr. J. Jeromson, Mesdames Clark, Bridges and Howland... There are 13 grandchildren. MR. R. W. HALL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Wednesday. Mr. R. W. Hall, aged 50, who collapsed ,in r street this afternoon and died of a heart seizure, had been Mayor orf : St. Kilda since 1925. He was also a member of the Dunedin Drainage Board, Otago Hospital Board and president of the Otago Area of the Temperance Reform Council. He contested Dunedin South in the Labour interest against the Hon. W. B. Taverner at the last general election, being defeated by only 33 votes.
