TRANSPORT ROW.

MEMBER'S ALLEGATION.

THREATENED WITH ASSAULT.

appeal for a hearing.

POINT OF ORDER RAISED,

'An allegation that he had been threatened with assault by the manager and on 6 of the members, was made by Mr. I - , S. Morton at a meeting of the Auckland Transport Board this morning.

Immediately the members took their seats Mr. Morton stood up, but was prevented from saying anything until the minutes were confirmed. Immediately that was done Mr. Morton rose again, and, speaking with evident feeling, said, "I have a very serious matter which is most urgent that I wish to bring before the board." • The Chairman: You'must ask the indulgence of members. Mr. Morton: I will. I think it only right' that members should deal- witli •it now. .The Chairman: What is your resolution?

Mr. Morton: At the close of the last ordinary meeting I was threatened, with assault. The Chairman (tersely): Will you resume your seat? If you want the indulgence of the board, you'must have three-quarters of the members present to support you. Do you ask for that indulgence ? Mr. Morton: Well, I suppose I must agree, because it is so urgent. The motion for indulgence was put and carried without dissent. . Mr. Morton: At the close of the last ordinary meeting of the board I was threatened with assault by the manager and also by Mr. Coyle, a member of this board.

e Mr. E. J. Phelan: Point of order, sir. . At this stage neither Mr. Phelan nor Mr. Morton could be heard, as both were on their feet, and talking at the iame moment. *

After the chairman had called, "Order, order!" Mr. Phelan persevered with his point, stating: "Nothing that transpires beyond the board meeting has anything td do with it."

The chairman was up like a flash with the remark: "Point of order sustained; out of order. Item No. 2 " Mr. Morton: I must object. I have no protection from you. v The Chairman (shouting): Resume your seat! Morton attempted to repeat himself, and again aver that he had had no protection from the chairman, but Mr. Allum took a firm stand, and sternly requested the member to resume his , seat. , Thumping the desk, the chairman said: "Sit down!" . Mr. Morton sat down, and the business of the meeting went on.
