WELL-BACKED WINNERS.

GOOD SPORT AT EPSOM.

WRACKLER WINS SPRING

HANDICAP.

joy bird's October handicap,

GREAT PARRISH A BRILLIANT COLT

There was some fine racing at Epsom bn Saturday, when, under ideal conditions, the Auckland Trotting Club opened the spring meeting. The winners in most races were well supported, but both Explosion and Rockburn, who filled the leading places in the" Stewards' 'Handicap, returned a double-figure dividend. The big race was won rather easily by Wraekler, while the second "leg" of the double went to Joy Bird. In the Mountain Trot there was an inquiry and it was held that Gold Sovereign, who finished second, had [bored out in the straight and affected Raima's chance. The placings were reversed, Raima being placed second and Gold Sovereign third. During the day ; the sum of. £35,555 was put through .the totalisator, compared with £35,847 for the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £292. . , A Smart Colt. Enawah, was not paraded for the "EParnell Handicap, and the public elected ; IGreat Parrish entrusting him [with £1411, with Queen Elizabeth (£796) j&nd. Ngahuia (£705) next in the order ibf betting. Warspite began best and 'showed the way to Belle .Axworthy, Ngahuia, Great Parrish, Great Ballin, land Queen Elizabeth. > Passing the stand the order was, Warspite, Belle Axworthy, Ngahuia, Great Parrish, Great Ballin, jQueen Elizabeth, Master Huia, Horizon, iand Our Nancy, and they ran out the tetraight as named. Queen Elizabeth moved up into third place along .the back, otherwise there was no alteration an the positions. Belle Axworthy was first to turn for home, with Great Parrish close up, then ; came Warspite and jQueen Elizabeth. Great Parrish drew but in the run to the post, and got the Verdict'by one length and a half from Belle Axworthy, who beat Warspite by two lengths. Queen Elizabeth- was fourth, then followed Master Huia, Great Ballin, Our. Nancy, Ngahuia and Cornelian. ,■ ■' " i

: Bracket Scores Trotters' Event. . . 'All started in the Mountain Handicap, jt two.-mile event for straight-out trotfor which the Bingen Starr and Peter McKinney bracket was made first choice, . being entrusted with £1370. Etta Cole (£903) and Gold Sovereign '( £817) also had a good following. When the .field settled down Etta Cole had charge from "■ Gold Sovereign and Peter McKinney, with Floraline and Dipnoi breaking. Passing the stand Etta Cole was showing the way to Tradesman, Gold Sovereign, Peter McKinney, Bingen Starr, >; The Tartar, and. Raima. This order was maintained passing the stand the next time, and along the back EttaCole was still in charge'from Tradesman, who was breaking. Then came Gold Sovereign, Peter McKinney and Raima. Crossing the top Peter McKinney and Ettii Cole 1 were on terms, but the lastnamed left her feet,.and Peter McKinney led into the straight from Gold Sovereign, Raima and Tiger Salve. Peter McKinney, Gold Sovereign and Raima .ihen'foughfc out a tight finish, the first- • named getting the decision by half a Ahead from Gold Sovereign, who bored 'in on Raima over the last bit and beat him by a neck. Etta Cole was fourth, iand then . came Tradesman, Ploraline, Ngatira and Tiger Salve. As the result of a lengthy inquiry concerning Golct Sovereign,, who finished second in the Mountain Handicap and interfered with Raima, the third horse, Iby boring over on him at the finish of that race, the stewards reversed the positions and placed Raima second and Gold Sovereign third. They accepted the. explanation from T. Roe, driver of Gold Sovereign, that he tried his best to keep his horse straight.

The Mile Sprint. Gold Dial was the only one missing from the October Handicap when the field paraded for the mile sprint. Several of the candidates got solid support, and when the machine closed the WarplaneCarmel bracket was favourite, carrying | £1264, next in request being Linkman |( £1200) and Joy Bird (£734). Warplane broke at the start and Joy Bird went to the front and led past the stand from Sunfish, Goldman, Warplane, Stan-: moor, The Shrew and All Bell. They .raced along the back in practically the same order, and crossing the top Joy Bird led Sunfish and Warplane, with Stanmoor and Goldman handy. This order was unaltered into the straight, where The Shrew also moved up. Joy Bird, continued in the lead and was a length and a quarter in front of Sunfish when they passed the post, with Stanmoor two lengths further back. Dillon Huon was fourth, then came The Shrew, AH Bell, Linkman, Warplane and Goldman. Surprise in Stewards'. Tony Victor was withdrawn from the Stewards' Handicap, and the public elected Sunshower favourite with £1719 opposite his number, while Evelyn Locanda ( £776) and Hall Chimes ( £696) came in for good backing. Explosion, the winner, carried £253, and Rockburn, who ran second, had £109 only invested on him. At the start Hal Chimes tangled, and Evelyn Locanda also lost ground. Great Peter was the early leader passing the stand, attended by Explosion, Lord Nepean, Concertina, Sunshower and Stoney, with Evelyn Locanda and Rereniai next. The last-named lo3t her driver going out of the straight, and Sunshower was also badly stopped at this 6tage. Passing the stand the next time Great Peter was showing tlic way to Explosion and Concertina, with Wd Nepean, Evelyn Locanda and Sunshower following. Along the back the order was Great Peter, Concertina, Explosion, Sunshower and Stoney, then came Evelyn Locanda and Rockburn. Explosion was first round the bend and led into the straight from Sunshower, Concertina, Great Peter and Evelyn Locanda, and, holding his own, in the rim home, he beat the fast-finishing who came up on the outside, by half a length, with Sunshower a neck away. Concertina was fourth, then came Evelyn Locanda, Great Peter and Stoney. Dick Dillon lost his driver during the race. Vendome Beats Sunfish., Lord Nepean wa« the only defection in the Electric. Hi;'-' r '">. f'lo rnichi'liivj event on the card. HoLi'v"; was very

br.sk in this race, and when the final figures were .adjusted the favourite, Mountain Dell, carried £1151, with Ven-' dome (£955) and Sunfish (£833) also supported solidly. When they were dispatched, Vendome took -charge ■ from Mountain Dell, Sailor Boy and Van Rich. Passing the 6tand the order was Vendome, Mountain Dell, Florent, Sunfish, Sailor Boy, Van Rich and Stanmoor. Vendome showed the way along the back, attended by Mountain Dell, Sunfish, Florent and Van - Rich, and they raced across the top in that order. Vendome came into the straight full of. running, and went on to score comfortably by 3 i lengths froin Sunfish, who beat Van Rich by a couple of lengths. Mountain Dell was fourth, then came Florent, Great Delight and Gold Dial. Results:— WAITBMATA HANDICAP (for Trotters only), of 250sovs. One mile and a half. Limit, 3.43. .A GREAT COLT. No matter what may be claimed for the southern three-year-olds, it is safe to say that when the field lines up for the Derby at Addington next month there are plenty of backers in Auckland who will think a £2 dividend about Great Parrish a great price. The half-brother to Great Bingen met some fairly smart pacers in the Parnell Handicap, and he disposed of them as though they were nothing at all. He did not leave the mark too well, but was in a handy position at the end of half a mile, and he was content to hold his position till a couple of furlongs from home. Then J. T. Paul moved him up to Belle Axworthy in the lead, and in the run up the straight lie just jogged in. He is the best colt Auckland has claimed, and if. he gets beaten in either Derby it will be worth going a long way to have a look at the three-year-old who can beat him. J. T. Paul will leave On Sunday or Monday next wiiJi Great Parrish for Christchufeh. If the colt gets beaten in fiic Derby then there arc no certainties In the sport, V ~

LINNETT THE GREAT SOLD. Although there was nothing outstanding in Linnett the Great's performance when she finished third in the Waitemata Trot, there was sufficient merit in the run to warrant the prediction that the imported mare will very shortly be leading her opponents home. If F. Smith is content to wait till the Christmas meeting she would win a couple of races and good stakes. She was easily the best actioned trotter in the field and though not nearly ready she ha'd the pace to go with Peterson over the last half mile. At Christmas the light introductory classes will suit her nicely. After her race on Saturday she was purchased by the Messrs'. McKendrick Bros., but will remain in F. Smith's charge. ■'•■•'■ WRAGKLER EASILY. Though Wrackler's winning margin at the end of the Spring Handicap was only a length, Mr. H. F. Nicoll's four-year-old had a comfortable win, and he is bound to gather in plenty more money for his owner. •In the race Maurice Hpisies had him nicely placed on the fence in fourth position for a little over a mile, but when the £eld began to close up Holmes was not going to be boxed in, and moved Wra'ckler up on the outside of Sister Beatrice, and within range of Nelson Tasker and Native Prince, the leaders. At the home turn Wraekler was asked to go up and win, and in a few strides he soon put the issue beyond doubt. He is not much to look at, but he is a good one who can both go fast and stay.
