OLD RING HERO.

Frank P. Slavin Dies In

Canadian Hospital.

PRIZE RING DAYS RECALLED. (Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Received 11 a.m.) VANCOUVER, October 17. Frank Slavin, the ex-prize fighter, died on Thursday in a military hospital. He served overseas with the Canadian forces during the war.

Frank Slavin was 67 years or age. He was born at Maitland, New South Wales, and started his career as a professional boxer in Sydney at the age of 23 years. After making a reputation in Australia he went to London, where he created a furore by fighting a draw under prize ring rules with the English champion, Jem Smith. This fight, one of the last of the barekunckle contests, was fought at Bruges in Belgium, on account of the police restrictions in England. He set the seal on his popularity by _ knocking out Joe McAuliffe, under Marquis of Queensburv rules, the following year, and after a visit to America, during which he defeated Jake Kilrain, he was matched in London against Peter Jackson, who proved the Australian's master. Slavin continued his ring career until December, 1907, when he was just on 46 years of age. He had been resident in Canada since 1597.
