W AIM ATE, Thursday.
A unique memorial to mark the golden jubilee of the Waimate Borough was unveiled this afternoon in the presence of a large gathering. The memorial is a replica of a Maori meeting house. Genuine old Maori carvings were secured for the front of the structure, which is placed across a corner of Seddon Square. It provides both a striking memorial and a useful shelter.
j Four marble tablets inside preserve the memory of Mr. Michael Studliolme. i the first white settler, the Maori chief j Huruhuru. with whom Mr. Studholme ! fraternised on his arrival, and also the i first Mayor and council and the jubilee Mayor and council. Chief Hnruhuru's tablet was unveiled by a young Maori named Thomas, the chiefs grandson. The tablet to the memory of Mr. Studholme was unveiled by Mr-. Boyle, a daughter of Mr. Studholme. that to the first council by Miss Manchester, a daughter of the fir=t 3 lay or. and the jubilee council tablet by the Mayoress, Mrs. Dash. Prior to the ceremony addresses were given by Mr. E. C. Studholme. a son of the first settler. Mr. George Finn, president of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association, and son of the first town clerk, and by other speakers.
