TIMBER INDUSTRY.
Mr. G. -Bartholomew's letter lias conicM a timely, moment, for which he deserves thanks; It is very evident that should this bill become law we shall very nearly complete the circle of a series of trusts and combines that arc gradually securing control of the business, of this country. The recent increases in the price of timber are the first evidence we have, of the result of the recent combination 01. Waikato and King Country sawmillers- The restrictive supply of certain, lines of timbers, which builders have been accustomed to u se since timber was first produced in this country, adds still further to the cost of building. While, the.conference is sitting in Auckland I would like to commend to its kind attention and consideration the genuine timber merchant who has no interest in a sawmill and who hW little representation at the timber merchants conference. Many of the representatives are both sawmillers ancl timber merchants and it is doubtful if*they can act impartially in this dual capacity. The average timber merchant is opposed to the sawmillers' combine but has no means of voicing his protest. I refer to merchants outside the big cities. RIMU.
