THE LATE J. McCOMBE.

Much regret was expressed at the death of the well-known owner-trainer, J. McCorribe, as announced in the "Star" on Saturday. He left the Dominion some months ago to raee some of his team in Sydney, and recently underwent a serious operation from which he did not recover. He was about 48 years of age, and at one time was" one of the leading jockeys in the Dominion. He was apprenticed to the late H. Goodman and for many years was first horseman for the Hon. G. McLean, president of the Dunedin Jockey Club. He also for a time held a similar position with the late Mr. G. G. Stead. His important successes in the saddle include the Great Northern Derby on Boniform, New Zealand Cup on Canteen, Jockey Club Handicap on Munjeet, Members' Handicap on St. Denis, New Zealand Derby on Euroclydon, Welcome Stakes on Armlet and Nautiform, New Zealand Oaks on Lady Rosslyn, Canterbury Cup on Euroclydon, Great Easter Handicap on Casket, Great Autumn Handicap on Boniform, C.J.C. Champagne Stakes on. Count Witte and Golden Slipper, Winter Cup on Jupiter, Dunedin Cup on Casket and Parable, Dunedin Champagne Stakes on Bonny Glen, Invercargill Cup on Jupiter, Oamaru Cup on Starshoot, Timaru Cup on Fulmen and Conway. Turning from the saddle to the training of horses, McCombe racefi in partnership with the late Mr. F.. Griff en, and after the latter's death, carried on M'ith a team of his own. Several good horses were, under his care, and important wins by the stable included the Winter Cup and Thompson Handicap, with Sunny Loch, and. the Jockey Club Handicap with Crown Area. Formless, Forgery, Amorist and Moorgas were other well-known performers from the stable, and it was with Crown Area and Moorgas that he made the trip to Sydney. Mrs. Ebb Simpson, of Trentham, and Mrs. W. Connell, of Auckland, are sisters of the deceased, who is survived by a widow and an only child, Mrs. R. S. Bagby, of Masterton. Mrs. McCornbe was in Sydney, with her husband at the time of his death and.the body will be brought back to New Zealand on the Maheno.
