INDUSTRIES AT NEW LYNN.
Will you permit me to refer briefly to a report in Tuesday's "Star" on the New Lynn industry? I have no interest therein, either financially or otherwise, except the welfare, of those who cannot live on air who have to work hard for the necessities of life and who are for sheer weariness at the end of the day unable to run a turnip patch, whereas some of the deputation mentioned are holding soft jobs in town and are able to run a farm or two besides How is it that people right away at the "back gate of New Lynn signed the petition while those living at the "front gate" were not approached? The value of bread and butW is superior to some of the hare-brained townplanning suggestions put forward by these same men, and if they were really concerned for the welfare of New, Lynn the present' Borough Council would not be in the financial difficulty it finds itself. As one who has property near this particular "front gate," I wish to say I am entirely favourable to'the industry and there are many more who are equally so. Why, during the last two years rents have gone down here fifty per cent in some instances, and I am quite sure this state of affairs would soon be reversed. New Lynn is better fitted for an industrial rather than ■ a residential area and even industrial districts can be made beautiful. I suggest we encourage all industry. I say good luck to anyone who is prepared to spend £25,000 which will provide homes, food and clothing for at least two hundred people. FOR THE WORKERS.
