THE SLOW CLASS TROT.

POOR FIELD IN OPENING EVENT. The first line up will be in the Introductory Trot, a slow clas.3 event in which the field is very weak. Only eight are in the race, but they have little or no form to recommend them, and backers will, not have much confidence. Paradigm, 24yds, should beat the limit trio, and Te Nguru, 48yds, would probably win if sue would go solid. She has the speed, but invariably puts in sufficient breaks to. settle her prospects. Togo's Promise and Sweet Memory are on 72yds, and they must be given good chances. The imported mare Linnet the Great is grving away 156 yds, which will be too much for her. It is not a good race to bet on, but backers may risk a little on PARADIGM, TE NGUTU. Frankton Handicap. This event presents a very open appearance, and with several promising novices on the front of the handicap the chances are the winner will have to better the handicap by some seconds to get the stake. Conder Belie showed form at Te Aroha, My Thorpe was a winner at Hastings, and others on the limit with good prospects are First Flight and Nell de Beau, who will be bracketed. Further back Peter Lloyd, 24yds, arid Te Wahia, 48yds, read best, but the chances are the limit horses will be most fancied, and the summing up may find the favourites ■ NELL DE BEAUFIRST FLIGHT, MY THORPE. • \ Mark Memorial, v It is the uncertainty of the sport that keeps it going, and no matter how good a race may'appear to bs for any particular horse, very frequently the presumed good thing gets beaten. But while this may be it is impossible to get away from the fact that in the Mark Memorial the two that stand right out are Mountain Dell and Lindbergh. There are other useful horses in the race, all with winning performances, but the ones that might possibly offer most opposition to the favourites are Warplane and Tony Victor. Warplane may just find the two miles a shade beyond him. It is not likely there will be much money on any but LINDBERGH MOUNTAIN DELL Hamilton Trot. This race, for straight-out trotters, should be one of the best or the programme. Three are on the front, and Kolmar should be able to hold Appeal and Gold Star. Lackiewood, 12yds, put up several fine performances, and is a solid customer who will not make mistakes. Akenehi, though beaten at her last start, is a speedy trotter, and must be given a big chance. Anseline has been trotting satisfactorily in her training, and stays rather 'well. On 48yds are Etta Cole and Floraline, both good sorts, while the pair further back, Gold Sovereign, 72yds, and Peter McKinney, 84yds, have proved themselves smart at two miles. However, the chances are backers will go for ETTA COLE, AKENEHI. Claudelands Handicap. This looks like being one of the hardest to solve. Haerenga Pai should beat Hori Dillon and Bell Dial off the limit, because she is the most Reliable of the trio. On 12yds are three, and all have good prospects. Enawah's performance at the Relief Fund meeting at a mile and a half was attractive, as she was the only pacer during the day to run her handicap. Polly's Picture stays two miles well, and Our Nancy, after losing a lot of ground at the start of the Seddonville Handicap, won by Mountain Dell, at the Relief Fund meeting, finished just behind the placed horses. Arachne has plenty of speed and will soon hit the front, but it may be that the last bit will find her out. Explosion is very well, but has consistently failed, while Limosa, after her second to Mountain Dell last meeting, must be given a good chance. Hal Chimes, 96yds, is speedy, but also erratic, and the chances are most money will be entrusted to LIMOSA, ENAWAH. Stewards' Handicap. If Mountain Dell should miss the .Mark Memorial she will have to be con- : idered in the Stewards' Handicap, in which she is on 24yds in a 2.19 mile. Ii! addition to her there are some fairiy smart sprinters in the race. Nella Dillon and Hohoro look the best of those on the limit, and of those on 12yds Pearl Logan may be best. Vendome and Great Peter, on 24yds, are bound to get solid support, and Joybivd, 48yds, can go a very merry mile. It is very open, and with several well backed the favourites may be PEARL LOGAN, GREAT PETER. President's Handicap. Races for unhoppled horses, pacers and trotters, are not very encouraging to bet upon. Pacers who can go right all the way for two mites without straps are not many, and' the prospects of the straight-out trotters are to be preferred. It may be that the Hamilton Trot earlier in the afternoon will

make things easy for backers, and whatever runs second in the Hamilton Trot should, if engaged, be considered in the President's. The field is practically the same in both races, and two who may get good backing are KOLMAR, PETERSON. Visitors' Handicap. The last chance to get the fare home will be provided when the field goes out for the Visitors' Handicap. This will be the biggest field of the day, and with a few exceptions the candidates will have raced earlier in the afternoon. The betting will be affected by penalties perhaps if early winners are stepped .

out again, but backers on the course will know the position. Nell de Beau and Great Parrish will be selected as tlie most likely of the limit horses. On 24yds are a smart trio in Hohoro, Araehne, and Dawdler, while on 30yds is a possibility in Pearl Logan. Others may have to be considered, but a couple in demand will be ARACHNE, GREAT PARRISH.
