BROTHERS ARRESTED.
FRAUD AND CONSPIRACY CHARGES. "PRETTY SMART FELLOWS." REMANDED ON BAIL. Yesterday Detectives Allan and Packman arrested two brothers on charges of attempting to defraud an insurance company. They were Cecil William Mitchell, aged 21, a salesman, and Arthur Moir Mitchell (21), farm hand. Both appeared at the Police Court this morning, when they were charged with attempting to obtain from the Insurance Office of Australia, Ltd., the sum of £180 by falsely representing that four bags and their contents, covcre'd by an insurance policy of £180, were lost, and further, with conspiring with each other by deceit, to defraud the same company. Mr. R. 0. Sellar, who appeared for accused, said he had just been instructed, and asked for a remand. He also asked for bail. Accused were New Zealanders and came from the south. Chief Detective Hammond: These two men conceived the idea of insuring their luggage with the insurance company at Christchurch for £180. They left Christchurch about September 30. One brother name to Auckland and took delivery of the luggage, which had been checked through, while the other came up later, said the bags had been lost and claimed the insurance. The bags were later found by the police f.t Taupiri, where another brother lived. Both intended leaving for Sydney. They -are strangers to us and went under fictitious names. They are pretty smart fellows.
Mr. Hunt remanded the brothers until next Friday, and allowed bail, each in one surety of £100 and another of a similar amount.
